Human Research Ethics Committee Members (Voluntary)

The La Trobe University Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) reviews ethics applications associated with research projects from all research disciplines in the University in accordance with the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research 2007 (Updated 2018) (‘National Statement’). As per the National Statement, the Committee promote ethically good human research, identify issues that arise in research project design, review conduct of human research, and deliberate about ethical issues related to human research.

We are currently seeking expressions of interest for the following two categories of membership:

  • Person or people with knowledge of, and current experience in, the professional care, counselling or treatment of people; for example, a nurse or allied health professional;
  • Person or people who performs a pastoral care role in the community.

Please ensure you clearly state which category of membership you qualify for in your Expression of Interest.

Members of the La Trobe University Human Ethics Committee are required to:

  • Become familiar with the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research 2007 (Updated 2018) (‘National Statement’);
  • Attend at least half of the scheduled meetings in the calendar year;
  • Review applications and make recommendations regarding the ethical acceptability of projects being undertaken by La Trobe University staff and students;
  • Ensure that any comments submitted about a project are relevant to the National Statement and other relevant guidelines and regulations; and
  • Maintain confidentiality of the committee’s proceedings.

Benefits include continued professional development. Though Committee members are volunteers, an honorarium to cover expenses associated with attending meetings is provided. The Committee is also supported by a team of Ethics Advisors in the University Research Office who are available to answer both researcher and Committee member queries.

Other points to note:

  • Induction training is provided to all new members prior to their commencement on the Committee.
  • Meetings are held monthly on Thursday afternoons, alternating between La Trobe University’s Melbourne city and Bundoora campuses. During COVID-19 pandemic the meetings are held by ZOOM video conferencing.
  • All members are required to sign a Confidentiality Agreement prior to commencement of duties for the Committee.
