About the role

There are two parts to this role:

  • To assist women living in Sydney Local Health District experiencing the effects of domestic and family violence, childhood trauma and social and financial disadvantage to process trauma, make informed choices and improve practical aspects of their lives.
  • To assist women partners of men who have sex with men (MSM) living in NSW through counselling support and increasing their awareness regarding risks for sexually transmitted infections including HIV, and strategies to negotiate safe sex.

This is achieved through the provision of evidence-based counselling strategies delivered from a wholistic, strength-based and solution focused approach that recognises the social, environmental, physical, economic, and cultural factors that influence women’s lives, and through collaborative approaches with the LWCHC medical and other staff.

Selection criteria

Essential:

  • Counselling tertiary qualifications and minimum five years’ in providing counselling to women experiencing socio-economic disadvantage and women with relationship issues, grief and loss, domestic violence and childhood trauma issues
  • Understanding of the effects of violence including domestic and family violence, childhood sexual abuse, CALD issues, lesbian and bisexual issues, clear understanding of intersectionality and the issues affecting Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse women
  • Understanding of sexual orientation and identity issues
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Planning and evaluation skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team as well as independently
  • Membership of a counselling professional organisation or demonstrate ability to meet the criteria of professional membership
  • Computer literacy

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of women’s health issues
  • Best Practice software and Microsoft Word and Outlook
