This is a Full-time Fixed (until 30/06/2023) opportunity based in South Melbourne, VIC within our Southern Residential Care Program.

Position Purpose:

MacKillop’s Out of Home Care (OOHC) Division provides residential care, home based care, lead tenant and case management support for young people with high and complex needs, and a therapeutically oriented program for young people in protective placements.

This position is situated within the Southern division and reports to the Residential Care Case Management Coordinator.

Primary Objectives:

  • Ensure that the children and young people’s rights and interests are protected at all times, and act as an effective role model.
  • Through goal directed, planned and integrated therapeutic interventions use all interactions as opportunities for therapeutic gain and positive engagement.
  • Support the children and young people to maintain important links with their family of origin, friendship networks and the local community.
  • Contribute to an environment that provides a sense of safety, structure, acceptance and security at all times for children, young people and staff, by providing relevant feedback as required.

Key Selection Criteria:

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Appropriate tertiary qualifications.
  • A current valid Victorian driver’s licence and be able to drive MacKillop vehicles in the conduct of the position requirements, including transportation of clients.
  • Knowledge of the Children, Youth and Families Act 2005 and policies relating to child welfare, family services and Child Protection Services.
  • An understanding of Trauma and how best to work with children and young people in program.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of working in the community sector – including, residential care, home based care, disability, family specialist and family reunification.
  • A knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture and values and an awareness of the current issues faced by Aboriginal children, young people and their families
  • Demonstrated understanding of, and respect for, cultural and linguistic diversity (CALD), including cultural safety for children from CALD backgrounds.
  • Well developed skills in assessing risks, needs and safety for children, young people and families.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated capacity to work collaboratively with others and exercise influence in a diversity of contexts.
  • Well-developed time management skills.
  • A genuine interest in young people and their wellbeing.
  • Demonstrate empathy for the young people in our care in an open minded and non-judgmental manner
  • Highly-developed capacity for emotional self-regulation, including the capacity to set and maintain consistent boundaries to provide safety, stability and consistency.
  • A commitment towards the principles and practice of quality care in residential settings for the most vulnerable and disadvantage young people, and to promote autonomy and self-determination for clients.
  • Maturity and flexibility in working with complex individuals and families.
  • Demonstrated expertise in responding creatively to the needs of children, young people and families with highly complex issues.
  • Sensitivity around issues of confidentiality, gender, cultural diversity, disability, age and sexuality in dealing with a wide variety of client groups.
  • Ability and willingness to work effectively as part of a team, to meet program goals and objectives.
  • Support for the purpose and ethos of MacKillop.

  • Satisfactory Criminal History Check;
  • Valid Working with Children Check;
  • Valid and current NDIS Workers Screening Check

The Australian Government recently introduced the NDIS Worker Screening Check, an additional, national legislated compliance requirement to determine if a person is cleared to work with people with disability. MacKillop requires all client facing staff obtain the NDIS Worker Screening Check.
