The Opportunity

Our Community Development, Inclusion and Positive Ageing Department has an exciting opportunity for a First Nations Project Officer to support the design and launch of Maribyrnong City Councils Reconciliation Action Plan. As our First Nations Project Officer, you will work closely with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and in collaboration with Council Departments to provide support in driving the implementation of our Action Plan, which aims to strive for reconciliation, maximum self-determination and sustainable positive change. This role will also have a strong connection to the Intercultural Cities Framework of which First Nations communities play an important role.

Maribyrnong City Council considers that being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent is a genuine occupational requirement of this role and as such, this position is designated for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples only under section 12 Special Measures of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 (Vic).

This is a temporary full time position until 30 June 2022 and reports to the Coordinator Diversity and Inclusion.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the implementation of cultural awareness training across the organisation. From Councillors, the Executive Team, the Management group and staff across the organisation;
  • Assist in the development and implementation of an engagement and consultation process with the community regarding January the 26th, in order to support Councils approach going forward;
  • Work with the Maribyrnong Reconciliation Action Plan Advisory Committee and support them achieve their goals and aspirations;
  • Provide project support for early and emerging actions of the Reconciliation Action Plan;
  • Understand the challenges and strengths that exist within the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander communities and direct, activate or advocate for change;
  • Strengthen social capital in the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and support Community to achieve their own wellbeing outcomes;
  • Act as Council's referral point for dissemination of information and advice relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander affairs.

To be considered for this role, you will have the following:

  • A tertiary qualification in Aboriginal Studies, Community Development or Social Sciences with some relevant experience working closely with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities or lesser formal qualifications with substantial experience;
  • Demonstrated experience in best practice community engagement principles and practices and a substantial understanding of issues that impact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples;
  • Ability to build positive and effective working relationships with the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and other stakeholders with a focus on facilitating positive and effective community engagement between those groups;
  • Previous experience coordinating, managing and evaluating a range of community-based programs and events;
  • Well developed interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to share, deliver and promote awareness and an ability to advocate for social justice outcomes for the communities you represent.
