GenV is a world-first initiative aiming to transform the whole of the state of Victoria into a single dynamic solutions platform, breaking down barriers in research to solve pressing questions and translating that into tangible actions that can improve the health, development and well-being of children and their parents.

One of the world’s largest birth cohorts, GenV is open to all 150,000 babies born in Victoria over two full years. Its design comprises consent; use of existing data and biosamples; augmented with GenV-specific measurement; and a design to maximise its multi-use potential e.g. to support trials, registries, place and community, discovery and health services research at the population level. This is a role with purpose. GenV seeks an enthusiastic candidate to lead, execute and support communications activities to achieve GenV’s ambitious vision. The Communications Manager will hold and communicate GenV’s core ethos and messaging via multiple external and internal channels. In addition, the Communications Manager will support and inform planning and implementation for stakeholder communication and engagement across all of GenV’s activities.As part of a small team, the Communications Manager must be proactive and hands on, with the ability to respond to requests swiftly, while not losing focus of competing priorities, higher level communications objectives, and supporting the Program Manager, GenV Directors and Stream Leads, as required. You will also enjoy a fast-paced and rewarding environment, joining a high-performing team, where you will constantly be challenged and learning.

Your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Leading the delivery of the communications and content strategy for GenV.
  • Holding and communicating GenV’s core ethos and messaging via multiple channels.
  • Integrate messaging for conversations with GenV’s major stakeholders (Victorian families, communities, health service professionals and researchers) about research and use of data in general, and for GenV in particular in relation to the development of a social contract.
  • Integrating and implementing GenV’s communications and stakeholder engagement plans.
  • Supervising and development of the GenV communications team and key external contractors supporting communications efforts.
  • Managing communications initiatives and strategy, providing leadership and guidance to staff.
  • Liaising with GenV partners and stakeholders to develop storytelling, ideas and pitches for media/PR activities (either GenV-led, or jointly with MCRI, funding or health services partners).
  • Coordinating all GenV launches and media opportunities (including government media opportunities) with MCRI media & communications team and Government Relations Manager.
  • Researching outlets and journalists with potential for strategically valuable coverage, working with the MCRI media and communications team.
  • Identifying media with higher reach into target audiences (e.g. pregnant women, hard-to-reach participants from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and Aboriginal communities), working with the MCRI media and communications team.

Selection Criteria

Essential:

  • Tertiary qualification preferably in communications, marketing, stakeholder management or related field and 5+ years’ experience in communications, public relations, advocacy or related field.
  • Capabilities in developing and implementing stakeholder engagement, communication +/or advocacy strategies in a complex setting.
  • Proven experience with delivering public-facing advertising/marketing campaigns.
  • Strong networks and relationships within and across the Victorian media sector.
  • Demonstrated skills in managing multiple competing priorities, including supervision of external consultants and agencies.
  • Competence with leveraging technology and software to implement and monitor activities at scale (e.g. CRM (Salesforce) integration, Google analytics, Campaign Monitor etc).
  • Advanced written and oral communication, interpersonal and presentation skills.
  • Ability to handle ambiguity without losing focus and to concentrate on outcomes over processes.
  • Overall work ethic is contribution by being a team member.

Desirable:

  • Experience with stakeholders in the research, health, medical, education or related sectors.
  • Experience of communicating complex topics to different audiences and stakeholders.
  • Interest in the population health of children and parents.
  • Understanding how patient data supports better conversations about the uses of health information.
  • Academic interest in or knowledge of advancing communication methods underpinning successful large-scale research.
