GenV is a world-first initiative aiming to transform the whole of the state of Victoria into a single dynamic solutions platform, breaking down barriers in research to solve pressing questions and translating that into tangible actions that can improve the health, development and well-being of children and their parents. One of the world’s largest birth cohorts, GenV is open to all 150,000 babies born in Victoria over two full years. Its design comprises consent; use of existing data and biosamples; augmented with GenV-specific measurement; and a design to maximise its multi-use potential e.g. to support trials, registries, place and community, discovery and health services research at the population level. GenV is led from the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute and is supported by the Paul Ramsay Foundation the Victorian Government, the Royal Children’s Hospital, and the University of Melbourne.

The landmark Generation Victoria (GenV) project is seeking a GenV Data Lead. This role will work with GenV’s Directors, stream leads and data team. Leading our data from a researcher perspective, they will work with our researchers, clinicians and technical team to ensure that GenV’s large-scale data and systems can enables its goal of helping solve complex problems facing today’s children and adults. While based within GenV’s Cohort and Science team, the role will work closely with GenV’s Platform & Operations team, especially GenV’s solution and data architects and repository lead. They will also work closely with the MCRI’s Office of the Chief Data Officer, such that the significant investment in GenV systems helps drive whole-campus data transformation in relevant areas. This role could be full time or part time, enabling the applicant to maintain a parallel technical, clinical or academic program. As a growth role, the level of remuneration and leadership will be tailored to the candidate’s experience.

Your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Providing strategic vision and guidance to the GenV Executive team in relation to data (collection, management, governance and services) and the data capabilities required to enable and support GenV’s strategic goals to benefit the health and wellbeing of children and parents.
• Driving GenV’s enterprise-wide data strategy and policy development.
• Driving GenV’s data quality and data life cycle management.
• Developing and nurturing state, national and international relationships and partnerships with other successful large-scale data-intensive health research initiatives, in particular relevant cohort studies.
• Ensuring the adequacy of GenV’s data capabilities to support integrative research, for example analysing data from GenV with those of other cohorts (eg federated, pooled datasets).
• Ensuring that GenV’s data governance and systems cater for the full scope of planned and possible data sources, research tools, user groups and functionality.

Selection Criteria

• Significant experience in data-intensive collaborative health research, ideally including large-scale technology-enabled data projects.
• Familiarity with acquisition, manipulation, storage and use of the range of diverse data encountered in modern health research (eg survey, biosamples/genomic, technology-enabled assessment eg images/functional, linked data, geospatial).
• Understanding of data linkage principles, practice and process.
• Up-to-date knowledge of conceptual models for database systems and related software tools and environments, including common data models, health data standards, and multi-scale data integration.
• Knowledge of data solutions and options available to support and enable longitudinal studies such as GenV.
• Knowledge of principles and processes of data governance in the context of human participants health research.
• Expertise or expert understanding of data analysis and data end-user needs.
• Organisational and leadership abilities.
• Outstanding skills in managing communication, people and stakeholders (including technical staff, researchers, clinicians).
• Problem-solving and solutions focus, with positive mind-set, high levels of motivation and a commitment to achieving project goals.
• Relevant tertiary qualifications, with an indication of their quality eg WAM/GPA.
