About the role:

Multicultural Australia is currently offering an opportunity for a Community Development Worker to work as part of our Community Development and Engagement team. The role is full-time, fixed-term for 12 months, with the potential for extension.

The Community Development Worker works actively in the community with new and existing refugee communities to assist in creating networks and support groups within the community. This role will support the delivery of Community Hubs in three local Toowoomba Schools. In addition, the Community Development Worker will build and maintain strong relationships across a culturally diverse range of clients, and will work to support the Team Leader in the planning, delivery and evaluation of Community Development initiatives. Among other duties, the successful candidate will:

  • Engage in community development work with new and emerging refugee communities. This includes regular engagement with community leaders and community members to identify specific needs and aspirations and develop realistic and achievable strategies to address these.
  • Establish and maintain positive, collaborative, respectful and productive working relationships with new and emerging communities and existing refugee communities.
  • Actively provide support for the development of community structures required to assist communities to achieve their goals, including assistance with the formation of community groups and networks
  • Actively provide support to refugee communities for needs assessment, planning, and project development processes.
  • Participate in planning, monitoring and evaluation in relation to the work of the community engagement team and our overall framework.
  • Build productive working relationships with individuals and teams within Multicultural Australia to inform planning and ensure the effective targeting of Multicultural Australia’s collective/community development work.

What qualifications and skills do I need?

You will be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and have effective communication and interpersonal skills. As well as having a confident and positive personality, you will possess:

  1. Proven experience working effectively and respectfully with cultural community associations, leaders, community members;
  2. Strongly evidenced understanding and skills in Community Development methodologies;
  3. Demonstrated ability to deliver programs understanding the needs of newly arrived families settling into communities, particularly those that engage with women and children;
  4. Demonstrated experience and knowledge of working with families within a settlement framework;
  5. Understanding of and experience working within an early years framework and ability to contribute to creating a culture of continuous improvement for local and national activities;
  6. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively on the delivery of national programs to meet the needs of local communities;

Successful candidate will be required to have a valid driver’s licence, police check and apply for a Working with Children Blue Card. It is a condition of employment with Multicultural Australia to fulfil all our current and future COVID-19 vaccination requirements.
