Melton Secondary College is a large co-educational government secondary school for students from Years 7 to 12 with a population of approximately 1300 students and 170 staff.

The College articulates a strong sense of purpose and a commitment to building cycles of success and confidence for every student. Teachers work collaboratively in Professional Learning Teams, using assessment data to inform planning and the High Impact Teaching Strategies to maximise student learning growth. Professional learning is ongoing, embedded in the core work of practice and remains focused on improving student outcomes. The College has a strong culture of peer-to-peer coaching in the pursuit of continuous improvement, participates regularly in collaborative projects and improvement initiatives with the local community, network schools, tertiary institutions and DET Victoria.

Differentiated learning approaches are available for individual students in every class and through the Accelerated Curriculum and Enrichment (ACE), Getting Ready in Numeracy (GRIN), Literacy Interventions programs and Flexible Learning Option satellite campus. There is a school wide focus on the development of literacy, numeracy and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) skills. An iPad program has been established in partnership with Apple Education and is being successfully implemented across the curriculum.

A large team of Education Support staff work closely with teachers in a range of settings and functions to support student learning. This includes wrap-around student support teams, such as our Wellbeing, Community Liaison, Learning Support, Interventions and Careers teams.

Selection Criteria

  1. Appropriate experience as a Speech Pathologist delivering comprehensive therapy services to students with additional needs in an educational environment.
  2. Sound knowledge of Speech Pathology therapy techniques and the ability to develop, provide and evaluate Speech Pathology services.
  3. Ability to work independently, participate effectively in a team environment and to develop collaborative working relationships.
  4. Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills in individual and group contexts.
  5. Ability to work collaboratively and constructively with internal and external stakeholders.

Role

The Speech Therapist will provide professional learning to teaching staff, development and implementation of school wide communication strategies, assessment and report writing, and the provision of individual and group targeted intervention programs.

This will include:

Clinical

  • To provide assessment, therapy program implementation, and ongoing evaluation, for an allocated caseload of children attending Melton Secondary College, within the Individual Learning Plan framework.
  • To apply sound theoretical knowledge and practical expertise when conducting clinical activities.
  • Provide a high level of speech pathology services to students, in collaboration with the allied health team, teaching staff, leadership, parents and carers
  • To provide complex professional reports requiring factual analysis, including assessments and recommendations for consideration by others.
  • Attend Student Support Group (SSG) meetings as required to develop individual goals in collaboration with teachers and families. Review students’ progress and communicate with staff and families to ensure the needs of the student are being met.
  • Develop resources for classrooms, class sessions, teachers, students, home environments

Liaison

  • To resource and support staff in their use of appropriate communication strategies as an integral part of their school program.
  • To liaise with school staff and families where appropriate, regarding the child’s progress to ensure that the individual needs are appropriately met.
  • To provide instruction and training to teaching colleagues with respect to specific communication strategies, including explaining professional concepts and approaches to clients, stakeholders, colleagues and staff.
  • To actively contribute to and participate in professional learning activities conducted by the Speech Pathology department for the benefit of teaching staff.

OrganiSing / Reporting / Procedures

  • To maintain client records including assessment results, program notes assessment and transition reports.
  • To provide teaching staff with a copy of program notes after each classroom consultation (which include specific recommendations) and maintain a copy for the Speech Pathology file.
  • To participate in meetings with therapy and educational staff as required.

Other duties as directed by the Executive Leadership Team or Business Manager

Responsibilities

  • Provide a high level of speech pathology services to students, in collaboration with the allied health team, teaching staff, leadership, parents and carers
  • Complete language assessments and write speech pathology reports for the Educational Needs Questionnaire
  • Provide professional learning to staff, parents and carers
  • Collaboratively work with allied health staff to implement and evaluation the Imaginative Play Program
  • Maintain appropriate records and provide written and oral reports in accordance with DET and school policies
  • Develop and maintain links with community resources and agencies
  • Liaise with external health professionals involved with care of students as necessary
  • Attend care team meetings as required

ABOUT YOU

Required experiences, qualifications and attributes:

  • Hold tertiary qualifications in a related field (or equivalent field experience in a similar role).

Desired experiences, qualifications and attributes:

  • Experience working in a school environment leader in an Education Support staff role.
