Carer Services

Merri Health has a long history of providing carer support services in northern metropolitan Melbourne, funded both through the federal and state government. In 2020, Merri Health became the lead agency in Victoria for the Carer Gateway, the Australian Government’s national carer hub. Carer Gateway services in Victoria are delivered by a number of regional delivery partners, one of which being Merri’s Carer Services Program. The program recently expanded from Northern metropolitan Melbourne to Western metropolitan Melbourne.

Merri’s Carer Services provides a range of programs, supports and activities to carers living in our catchment area. These include assessment & planning, care coordination, peer support, coaching, counselling, respite support, events and activities, and supports specifically for young carers and those caring for people with dementia.

Your new role

Young carers are people up to 25 years old who provide unpaid care and support to a family member or friend with a disability, a physical or mental illness, a substance dependency, or who is aged. The Young Carer Engagement Officer will plan and undertake initiatives and activities that aim to build the capacity of young carers.

The Young Carer Engagement Officer will engage with young carers and relevant stakeholders in Merri’s catchment area (Northern and Western Metro Melbourne) to identify gaps in service provision, develop sustainable initiatives to fill these gaps and meet the needs of young carers. The Young Carer Engagement Officer will also engage with community stakeholders to increase awareness about young carers and Merri Health service offerings and to drive Carer Gateway registrations.

The Young Carer Engagement Officer will work closely with the Young Carer Engagement Advisor (sitting within the Carer Gateway team), who oversees young carer initiatives and activities across the state. They will also collaborate with other Carer Services teams, in particular the Community Engagement and Program Development team, which conducts a range of carer engagement activities across the ageing, disability and mental health sectors.
