Girl Coach - The Smith Family - Bairnsdale

Michael Page

Girls at the Centre is a multi-faceted program providing intensive and holistic support aimed at strengthening social, emotional, and academic aspirations for participating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls in Year 7-12. Girl Coaches are active role models and provide access to networks outside the school to raise aspirations and develop thinking on career pathways.

This position is responsible for recruiting girls and their families to the program, organising regular activities in line with program guidelines, providing coaching and support to girls to address barriers which may be affecting their educational attainment and engaging with parents/carers.

Girl Coaches work closely with partner school staff to ensure participating girls are on track with their goals and to provide wrap-around support around attendance, advancement and engagement. The role involves taking a strengths-based, family-led practice approach with the objective to support stronger educational outcomes for students.

A day in the life of a Girl Coach might look like this, but really every day will be different:

  • Liaising with teachers, KESOs and wellbeing teams to monitor and support the progress of students on the program.
  • Working directly with participants to develop goals, confidence and aspiration around education and pathways.
  • Contacting parents and families to inform of programs being delivered and discuss student progress.
  • Taking a family led practice approach to maximise school attendance and support key transitions.
  • Delivering or supporting delivery of programs (from camps and excursions focused on pathways and life skills to programs on cultural awareness).
  • Collecting data and feedback and analysing program effectiveness for continuous improvement.
  • Sourcing students and families for media opportunities.

It takes a special kind of person to be one of our Girl Coaches. Successful candidates will bring the following:

  • High level interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent organisational skills, time management and planning.
  • Proven experience in working with students and families taking a family partnership approach.
  • A respectful approach and understanding regarding cultural awareness and education.
  • Strong desire to work collaboratively in a team and with wider Smith Family program teams.
  • A mindset that demonstrates belief in all students’ potential and lifelong learning.
  • Administrative skills (computer literacy and data entry highly desirable).
  • Hold a current driver’s license and car (motor vehicle allowance provided).
