The Social Policy Group (SPG) is a national body with specialist expertise in social policy, social and community cohesion, population diversity, gender equality, access and equity, community participation and inclusion, systems’ responsiveness, community outreach and engagement, and digital and multilingual communications. SPG is an umbrella organisation for a number of national bodies and initiatives, including Harmony Alliance: Migrant and Refugee Women for Change, Migration Council Australia, Migrant and Refugee Health Partnership, Centre of Digital Wellbeing, and Judicial Council on Cultural Diversity, among others.

About the position

The successful applicant will be required to work across a range of policy objectives and facilitate a number of programs with a focus on gender, and particularly migrant and refugee women. The position reports to the Manager – Gender.

Primary responsibilities

  • Facilitate a range of projects with a focus gender, and particularly improving access, experience and outcomes for migrant and refugee women.
  • Undertake research on issues affecting migrant and refugee women in Australia, through desktop analysis and consultation with relevant community and sector stakeholders.
  • Develop policy advice and prepare policy briefs and other material for internal and public dissemination.
  • Develop tools and resources for migrant and refugee women and communities, as well as relevant sectors.
  • Support the work of Harmony Alliance: Migrant and Refugee Women for Change.
  • Carry out other duties in this regard as requested by supervisor.

The mix of activities in this role varies in accordance with work priorities and can shift from week to week. Flexibility, versatility and resourcefulness are essential in our small team. Travel will be required at times to successfully perform this role.

Key selection criteria


  • An understanding of policy and practice as they relate to access, experience and outcomes for migrant and refugee women.
  • Exceptional written communication skills are a must, including the ability to develop quality issues briefs, research and consultation reports, and other policy papers.
  • Exceptional oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate with purpose and influence.
  • Prior experience with stakeholder engagement and management.
  • Proven analytical and research skills.
  • Self-motivation and ability to deal with a high level of responsibility.
  • Strong computer literacy skills.
  • Adaptability and the ability to work collaboratively and independently within a small team.


  • Understanding of, and commitment to, the issues of migrants and refugees, and particularly women in this cohort.
  • Gender expertise and formal qualifications in a relevant discipline.
  • Experience working in the not-for-profit sector.
  • Knowledge of government and public policy processes.
