The Social Policy Group (SPG) is a national body with specialist expertise in social policy, social and community cohesion, population diversity, gender equality, access and equity, community participation and inclusion, systems’ responsiveness, community outreach and engagement, and digital and multilingual communications. SPG is an umbrella organisation for a number of national bodies and initiatives, including SETSCoP, Migration Council Australia, Centre of Digital Wellbeing, Judicial Council on Cultural Diversity, Migrant and Refugee Health Partnership, and Harmony Alliance: Migrant and Refugee Women for Change, among others.

About the position

The successful applicant will be required to work across a range of policy objectives and facilitate a number of programs with a focus on settlement of migrants and refugees.

The position reports to Senior Manager – Settlement.

Primary responsibilities

  • Provide logistical and substantive support to SETSCoP – Community of Practice for organisations delivering services under the Settlement Engagement and Transition Support (SETS) program: https://setscop.org.au
  • Facilitate a range of projects with a focus on improving settlement outcomes for migrants and refugees.
  • Support research on settlement issues affecting migrants and refugees, through desk review and consultation with relevant community and sector stakeholders.
  • Support the collection, collation and analysis of data and input from settlement sector stakeholders.
  • Develop tools and resources for settlement sector stakeholders.
  • Carry out other duties in this regard as requested by supervisor.

The mix of activities in this role varies in accordance with work priorities and can shift from week to week. Flexibility, versatility and resourcefulness are essential in our small team. Travel will be required at times to successfully perform this role.

Key selection criteria


  • An understanding of settlement of migrants and refugees.
  • Strong written communication skills, including the ability to develop quality written work.
  • Exceptional oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate with purpose and influence.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Prior experience with stakeholder engagement.
  • Self-motivation and ability to deal with a high level of responsibility.
  • Strong computer literacy skills.
  • Adaptability and the ability to work collaboratively within a small team.


  • Understanding of, and commitment to, the issues of migrants and refugees.
  • Experience working in the not-for-profit sector.
