About the role

The Community Care Units (CCU) program provides intensive treatment and recovery support in a residential setting (up to two years) to help people stabilise their mental health and gain the skills necessary to move back into the community. Clients are provided care by a 24/7 clinical team and Mind staff who focus on supporting development of social and daily living skills as well as building confidence to live independently.

We have a permanent, part time (30 hours per week) opportunity for self-motivated, compassionate Community Mental Health Practitioner - Cultural to work on a 24/7 rotating roster in the Cairns area. Working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, you be integral in delivering person-centred, recovery oriented supports and ensuring identified goals and aspirations align with an individual’s plan.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide targeted and integrated case managed responses to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients with flexible outreach.
  • Support clients by delivering high quality service and facilitating positive educational and social experiences.
  • Build trust through strengths focused engagement including building relationships with local communities, kinship groups and with elders.
  • Provide consultation to the team and stakeholders to raise awareness of health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Assist clients to reconnect or connect with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and services.

What you’ll bring

  • Tertiary qualifications (minimum Certificate IV) in Mental Health, Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy or other health-related field.
  • Able to provide a record of Vaccination Preventable Diseases or able to obtain vaccinations against Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Chicken Pox, Whooping Cough, Hepatitis B or other diseases as required by our Partnership with QLD Health.
  • Expertise in working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples with mental health issues who have complex needs and strong experienced interacting with communities, families and carers.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Community Services sector and ability to build strong relationships with agencies, clinical providers, local communities and elders.
  • Understanding of the link between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health outcomes, homelessness and mental health.
