About the role

The Crisis Support Space (CSS) service enables better access to alternative mental health crisis supports for adults 18 years+ experiencing mental distress and/or suicidality where substance use is a factor. CSS seeks to prevent emergency department presentations or inpatient admissions to acute mental health units by offering a café-like atmosphere which provides a supportive, empathetic and calming environment where individuals can access non-clinical peer support.

We are seeking a compassionate, resilient Community Mental Health Practitioner - Peer Practitioner for permanent, part time (30 hours per week) opportunity to work on a 24/7 rotating roster in the Cairns area. You will bring your specialist lens of lived experience with mental ill health and recovery to provide clients with person-centred supports enabling a return to their community and independent living.

Key responsibilities

  • Utilise your own lived experience of mental ill health and recovery to inform your work and the work of the team.
  • Deliver high quality services and facilitate positive educational and social experiences.
  • Collaborate with a range of services and the community to ensure a co-ordinated and integrated response to the client’s recovery goals.
  • Plan and deliver group programs that aid clients to build their skills and focus on recovery.

What you’ll bring

  • Tertiary qualifications (minimum Certificate IV) in Mental Health, Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy or other health-related field.
  • Able to provide a record of Vaccination Preventable Diseases or able to obtain vaccinations against Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Chicken Pox, Whooping Cough, Hepatitis B or other diseases as required by our Partnership with QLD Health.
  • Prior lived experience and willingness to support clients through sharing learnings and recovery orientated practice is required.
  • Expertise in working with people with mental health issues, complex needs, AOD and collaborating with families and carers.
