Purpose of the Position

The Domestic and Family Violence Specialist Worker – Hearing and Intensive Support Focus provides support that is relevant, accessible and responsive to women who have been affected by domestic and family violence and their matter is now before the Courts as a Hearing. The two positions will also assist with the women’s immediate needs for emergency relief, accommodation, etc. while referrals for ongoing support are being put in place for the family. The service will particularly be available for women who are disadvantaged by language, Aboriginality, disability or other circumstances accessing either the Parramatta Local or Family Courts.

A good understanding of the issues in relation to domestic violence and familiarity with Court processes for Hearings are essential skills for these roles.

Being a woman is a genuine occupational qualification for these positions under Section 31 of the NSW Anti-Discrimination Act, 1977.

A current Working with Children and a relevant NSW Police Check are requirements of this position.

Accountability

Both positions will report directly to the Cumberland WDVCAS Manager.

Term: Fulltime to 17 December 2021

Location: Parramatta

  • General duties

Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrated understanding of clients affected and escaping domestic violence.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the criminal justice response to domestic and family violence including AVO applications and criminal prosecutions and related legal matters such as family law, care and protection, migration and victim’s compensation issues.
  • Excellent communication skills, particularly in negotiation, advocacy and conflict resolution.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage effectively with clients in crisis and provide appropriate, trauma-informed support.
  • Excellent organisational and administrative skills.
