The Monash University Human Research Ethics Committee (MUHREC) is seeking additional members. The Committee reviews all research conducted by Monash University staff or students involving human participants. The primary role of committee is to protect the welfare and the rights of participants in research.

Membership of MUHREC is in accordance with the requirements of the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research

Expressions of interest for the following categories of membership are open:

  1. Researcher – someone with knowledge of, and current experience in, research with or about Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people.
  2. Pastoral Care – someone who performs a pastoral care role in the community - for example an Aboriginal Elder or Minister of Religion.

Appointments are for an initial period of twelve months with the possibility for renewal.

Time commitment

Members are expected to attend 8 meetings throughout the year and contribute to follow up review processes as well as attend training. Applicants must possess effective interpersonal skills, competent computer skills and be able to read large documents online within the required timeframe.

MUHREC Members’ Responsibilities

  • Each member is responsible for making themselves familiar with the contents of the National Statement.
  • Each member is responsible for deciding whether, in their judgement, a proposal submitted meets the requirements of the National Statement and is ethically acceptable.
  • Each member is assigned to a sub-committee of MUHREC and needs to prepare for and attend at least 70% of the scheduled meetings of that sub-committee. Applications are reviewed online and meetings are conducted using the online Ethics Review Manager system. In the event that a member cannot attend the scheduled meeting they are required to make their opinions about each application before the Committee known to the Chair (through the Human Ethics Office) prior to the meeting.
  • Each member must attend continuing education or training programs, such as the MUHREC training, at least every three years.
  • Members who have been on the committee for 6 - 12 months are deemed to be experienced and may be invited to read low risk applications as per the procedures below.
  • Members given access to confidential material or information in order to assess an application’s ethical merits are bound to maintain that confidentiality.
