POSITION SUMMARY

The Connecting With Country Consultant is a newly created position responsible for contributing to the delivery of Indigenous planning strategies in infrastructure and other place-based projects. The position will work with Indigenous communities through a place based approach to undertake the following:

  • Engage Indigenous communities on infrastructure or planning processes
  • Facilitate Indigenous community engagement around the table in regenerative design and/or planning processes on Country
  • Advocate for Indigenous intellectual and cultural property and knowledge rights
  • Ensuring the cultural, social, scientific and economic value that comes from Indigenous knowledge to Connecting with Country is honoured with clear, long term outcomes and benefits for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Integrating the NSW Government Architect’s Connecting with Country framework
  • Ensuring truth telling in place based projects is articulated

The position provides an opportunity for a passionate tertiary qualified individual to grow into a rapidly developing area of work and help shape planning responses when working on and with Country. It requires the ability to communicate through written and oral reports and presentations to a diverse audience, including developers, architects, planners and design consultants. You will also use your skills in working with clients to take on an advocacy role, ensuring the best outcomes for the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander peoples on whose Country the project takes place.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Form and maintain internal and external networks with key staff, community stakeholders and industry representatives to assist in the achievement of project and company goals
  • Engage with local Indigenous communities in the design and development process with respect to infrastructure projects on Country
  • Develop and implement appropriate and culturally safe community engagement methods
  • Work with the NSW Government Architect Office’s Connecting with Country Framework
  • Participate in high level negotiations with clients and other stakeholders
  • Use skills and cultural insights to work with consortia of architects, designers and planners
  • Maintain files, registers and databases related to your projects
  • Compose well researched and professionally presented reports for stakeholders
  • Provide research, cultural insights and significant verbal and written contributions to project proposals
  • Actively contribute to the ongoing development of innovative and strategic policies, work practices and procedures

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Must Identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person
  • Commitment to social change for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • An appreciation and understanding of the impacts and issues affecting land use and development as they relate to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • Tertiary qualifications in any of the following: Planning, Regenerative Design, Architecture, or related field
  • Minimum of 4 years employment in your area of training or related field and ability to work independently on significant project elements
  • Excellent organisational skills, and attention to detail
  • Ability to write clear and concise advice, submissions & reports, including for government and corporate stakeholders
  • Able to prioritise the competing demands of multiple projects within agreed timeframes
  • Ability to use cultural and professional skills to produce visual representations in reports
  • Demonstrated capacity to maintain confidentiality and professional standards of behaviour in difficult and sensitive circumstances
  • Demonstrated research, analytical and problem solving skills
  • A proactive, collaborative mindset and ability to work within a culturally diverse team environment across multiple locations

GENERAL CONDITIONS

All Murawin staff are required to:

  • Undertake a police check and or a working with children check as required by any contractual work
  • Participate in flexible working hours, including occasional weekends, and have the willingness and availability to travel to locations across Australia.
  • Act at all times in ways that accord with Murawin’s policies and procedures, and ethical guidelines for working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities.
