About the Service

The Urgent Mental Health Care Centre (UMHCC) is an exciting new service which will provide South Australian’s an alternative service to attend when experiencing mental health crisis. The UMHCC is a first of its kind service in Australia and is based on our formal partner, RI International’s (RII) “Crisis Now” movement and their international leading lived experience, high engagement, multi-disciplinary crisis model offering an alternative to Emergency Department presentations.

More about the Role:

Peer Support Workers are integral members of the team and represent 50% of the workforce within the UMHCC. Peer Support workers draw on their lived experience of recovery from mental illness, mental health crisis or caring for someone living with a mental illness to instil confidence and hope in others about the journey of recovery. You must have a lived experience of your own mental illness/caring role, and a rich understanding of the processes of recovery. You must be willing to purposefully use your own story to help others further their own understanding of recovery.

You will:

  • Work alongside a multi-disciplinary team inclusive of mental health clinicians, mental health registered nurses and nurse practitioners, registrar medical officers and consultant psychiatrists
  • Support a high engagement model of care
  • Play an important element of the team approach and bring the wisdom of experience to many aspects of service delivery including intake interviews, service promotion, partnership work and case reviews
  • Peer Support Workers have access to a tailored training program and to regular professional development sessions

What are we looking for?

  • Lived experience of your own mental illness and a rich understanding of your own processes of recovery
  • A willingness to purposefully use your own story to help others further their own understanding of recovery
  • Experience as a consumer/care of someone accessing of the public or private mental health system
  • Ability to be flexible and to adapt and respond to change
  • Ability to foster and maintain respectful, professional relationships with consumers, staff and organisations
  • You must have an appropriate length of time in recovery to be able to effectively and safely conduct the peer support worker role, and a willingness to continue to engage in recovery supports where appropriate.

Mandatory requirements:

  • It is a requirement of the Peer Support Worker position that you hold, and provide Neami evidence of, a Mental Health (or equivalent Human Services, Community Services) qualification of Certificate IV level or above, or complete such a qualification within 2 years of your commencement of employment.
