The Organisation

Aboriginal Legal Service NSW/ACT (ALS) has been providing legal services to Aboriginal people since 1970. They were the first free legal service in the country and are the leading legal services organisation providing free legal help, including advice and representation, to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men, women and children in NSW and ACT.

ALS is also a fearless advocacy organisation, committed to achieving justice for Aboriginal people. They are ethical, accountable and community focused and, with the NSW Coalition of Aboriginal Peak Organisations, have a lead role in the development of jurisdictional implementation plans to support the goals of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap.

The Role

Working closely with the CEO you will provide strategic and operational leadership. You will play a visible role and lead ALS programs with oversight of marketing, communications, policy and advocacy.

You will also:

  • Act as a spokesperson and communicate the ALS vision and agenda
  • Lead and manage ALS representation in Closing the Gap
  • Build internal capability and delivery of community programs
  • Engage with a range of influential stakeholders
  • Provide high level advice as part of the executive team
  • Enable ALS to support community and meet its impact goals

Skills Required

You will identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person and will have proven experience in a front facing leadership position, perhaps as the CEO of a smaller community organisation.

You will also have:

  • A proven ability to apply strategic and operational leadership
  • Experience developing and leading community programs
  • Experience leading and developing culturally diverse teams
  • An understanding of and experience in government relations
  • An ability to influence a wide range of stakeholders
  • A hands-on, practical and flexible approach to problem solving
