The Organisation

Suicide Prevention Australia (SPA) is the national peak body for the suicide prevention sector. SPA is a member-based organisation that’s guided by people with lived experience of suicide, counting amongst its members the largest and many of the smallest organisations working in suicide prevention, practitioners, researchers and community leaders.

SPA exists to provide a clear, collective voice for suicide prevention so that together lives can be saved and, through collaboration and shared purpose, works towards the ambition of a world without suicide.

The Role

Reporting to the Manager Policy and Government Relations, you will support SPA’s policy team to generate evidence and supporting resources to progress government and community advocacy and engagement.

You will do this by undertaking:

  • Research for, and drafting of, submissions, reports and briefs
  • Analysis to help build a strong evidence base for policy initiatives
  • Identifying and highlighting new opportunities for policy thinking in suicide prevention
  • Monitoring changes in the media, political, government and policy landscape
  • Administrative support for Policy Committee, Lived Experience Panel and other meetings
  • Assisting in consultations with community support providers and those with lived experience
  • Assisting with maintaining effective relationships across a range of stakeholders

Skills Required

You are passionate about social impact and want to apply your skills and experience to solving systemic problems. You may be looking to develop your policy skills and gain practical experience within a supportive and experienced team, or you may have experience in a similar position researching and analysing policy issues.

You thrive working in a collaborative fast-paced environment and you can demonstrate:

  • Skills in research and writing for outputs such as submissions, reports, briefings
  • Knowledge around policy development and government processes
  • Ability to communicate with a diverse range of stakeholders
  • Strong time management skills and ability to work to deadlines
  • Administrative support skills such organising meetings and note-taking
