The Organisation

The Australian Education Union (AEU) is the federal union for teachers, principals, support staff and all educators working in public education. The Role

Working in the Federal AEU office you will develop strategies to implement policies, objectives and campaigns to increase the participation and engagement of women and girls in all education sectors and within the AEU itself. You will contribute to policy development, including addressing gender, diversity and other forms of discrimination in the education industry.

Reporting to the Federal Secretary and engaging with women’s officers in the AEU Branches and Associated bodies, you will also undertake analysis, research and prepare responses and submissions tackling gender, equity and diversity issues. You will also increase the recruitment and engagement of women members.

Skills Required

You are currently performing a similar role in education, a Union or a like-minded sector. You have a knowledge of the major policy issues for gender and employment and the relationship between industrial and professional concerns, equity and discrimination.

You have the capacity to develop networks and work collaboratively with a diverse range of external allies, and stakeholders and an understanding of campaigning and its importance to achieve objectives.

Generic knowledge and experience

  • Written and verbal skills including report and submission writing
  • The ability to work collaboratively in a team, or independently as appropriate
  • Research skills including the ability to identify and analyse issues and propose solutions
  • Skills including the ability to meet deadlines and manage competing demands
  • Knowledge of and commitment to public education and unionism
