About the service and the role

Norfolk Island Health and Residential Aged Care Service (NIHRACS) is committed to improving the care provided to our patients in line with our vision of working together to improve the health and wellbeing of our community. NIHRACS is a multipurpose service including a General Practice Clinic, Outpatients, Emergency Service, 6 Acute beds and 10 Residential Aged Care beds.

The role of the Child, Youth and Family Clinician will focus on the delivery of a range of appropriate therapies and counselling services, including drug and alcohol counselling, to children, young people and their families. The purpose of this role is to increase mental health service provision on Norfolk Island to enhance prevention, early identification, intervention, and management of mental health conditions for children, young people and their families on Norfolk Island. The aim is to improve health and social wellbeing.

The position will work collaboratively with other professionals, to provide comprehensive assessment, treatment, advice and support to individuals and families.

This is a temporary full time 12 month position, with possibility of extension. The successful applicant, if relocating from outside Norfolk Island, will be eligible for a relocation reimbursement to assist with travel and moving costs.

The Child, Youth and Family Clinician will be required to respond to calls on the after-hours crisis line on a rotating roster. The position will contribute to building a robust and integrated service system on Norfolk Island. The successful applicant will ideally have experience working in a small, remote community.

Selection Criteria

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications as a Clinical Psychologist, Psychologist, to be registered with Medicare as a Mental Health Provider. Registered with AHPRA or relevant professional body.
  • Possession of a current Working With Children Check from an Australian jurisdiction that provides clearance to work with vulnerable people.
  • At least five years extensive experience working with children and young people with a range of psychosocial and co-morbidity issues whilst engaging their families and carers, with the ability to conduct thorough mental health assessments.
  • Knowledge, experience and skills in the provision of a range of evidence based therapeutic modalities to children, young people and their families.
  • High level interpersonal, communication and organisational skills with a demonstrated ability to work independently and cooperatively with other professionals in providing joint case management of clients.
  • Proven ability to make decisions, use good judgement, expertise and knowledge, under limited guidance
  • Experience in the provision and facilitation of group work programs.
  • Possession of a current Australian driver’s license and willingness to acquire a
  • Norfolk Island driver’s licence.
  • Demonstrated consideration of the impact of relocating to Norfolk Island and impact of living in a small, remote community.
