About the role

Do you want to work as part of a team to help eliminate domestic and family violence in our local community? North Queensland Domestic Violence Resource Service (NQDVRS) is seeking a Men’s Behavioural Change Worker to co-facilitate groups and attend court to provide information and referral to male respondents.

As a co-facilitator you will deliver the MenTER Group program which is based on the Duluth model and curriculum. The group program is provided for men who are intending to live free from the use of violence and abuse in their relationships. The role works closely with a co-facilitator and women’s advocates with a shared commitment to keep women and children safe and hold perpetrators to account.

Key Requirements

  • A three-year tertiary qualification in a relevant human services discipline is highly desirable.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ full time equivalent professional experience in a relevant human services discipline is essential.
  • Observed a minimum of 16 hours perpetrator intervention group work (or ability to obtain during probationary period)
  • Completed specialist evidence-based group perpetrator intervention training in the Duluth Model is desirable or prepared to undertake such training.
  • Experience in facilitating perpetrator or other relevant group work with clients with complex and diverse needs is essential.
  • Demonstrated understanding of behavioural change process in relation to domestic and family violence.
  • Demonstrated nuanced and intersectional understanding of the drivers, dynamics and impacts of domestic and family violence and the dynamics of gender, power and control.
  • Recognition of the significance of patterns of perpetrator behaviour beyond individual incidents of violence.
  • Demonstrated recognition of the complex ways in which children are harmed through experiencing violence, and the tactics of control and abuse of power that they experience.
  • Understanding of the Domestic and Family Violence Services Practice Principles, Standards, and Guidance.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to negotiate, problem solve, influence and build relationships.
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills with the ability to respond to multiple demands when working under pressure.
  • High standards of personal integrity, ethical principles and values.
  • Understanding of Domestic and Family Violence Protection Act 2012 and Child Protection Act 1999 and Child Protection Reform Amendment Act 2017, Family Law Act 1975 and Domestic and Family Violence Information Sharing Guidelines 2017 and Information Sharing Guidelines 2018.
  • Current QLD C Class Driver’s License
  • Working with Children Check (Blue Card)

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Provide information and referral to the Men’s Behaviour Change group program.
  • Perform Intake and Assessments to determine suitability of men to participate in group.
  • Undertake assessments of risk and inform respondents about their rights and responsibilities and the limited confidentiality within the program.
  • Liaise with Women’s Advocates prior to participants commencing group and ensure information sharing and appropriate processes are followed.
  • Co-facilitate men’s behavioural change groups following the Duluth model and curriculum.
  • Model an equal and respectful relationship, being mindful of the dynamics of the working relationship, working from a feminist analysis of domestic violence.
  • Approach interactions with participants in a respectful and courteous way, whilst holding them accountable for the behaviour that they have committed and remaining aware of collusion and privilege that you hold as facilitators.
  • Where a man is assessed as being “not group ready”, work with the client through individual sessions to establish group readiness.
  • Undertake review sessions with group participants and perform exit interviews and complete documentation.
  • Participate in ongoing weekly Case and Risk Assessment meetings with Women’s Advocates.
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders to coordinate high risk responses for group participants.
  • Attend the Court to inform male respondents about their rights and responsibilities when engaging with court, provide information and referral and discuss participation in the Men’s Behaviour Change group program.
  • Liaise with and work in cooperation with the NQDVRS court advocates.
  • Contact male respondents referred via QPS and provide information and referral.
  • Organise group observers and take part in observer feedback discussions.
  • Support compliance with Service Requirements & Regulatory Frameworks, in responding to men who use violence and abuse in their family relationships.
  • Liaise and build networks with similar services and referring bodies to enable exchange of information and skills.
  • Prepare written reports to Court, Community Corrections & Solicitors regarding the client’s engagement and participation in the programs.
  • Participate in other identified groups to support behavioural change.
  • Assist with the organisation and implementation of community education and awareness activities, and networking within the community, including any local Domestic and Family Violence Action or Networking Groups.
  • Provide a service that is culturally appropriate, respectful and meets client needs at all times.
  • Maintain client confidentiality.
  • Work collaboratively and respectfully with the other staff team members.
  • Record client information pursuant to NQDVRS client management system requirements.
  • Participate in NQDVRS structures such as staff meetings, supervision, staff appraisal, de-briefing and administration processes.
  • Work within the Policy and Procedures of NQDVRS and follow all workplace health and safety requirements and maintain awareness of personal safety.
