Aim of the Service:

North Queensland Domestic Resource Service (NQDVRS) provides a culturally appropriate, respectful and holistic response to people affected by domestic and family violence. Our vision is to create a community that is free from domestic and family violence.

Purpose of the Position:

Under the guidance of the Team Leader, the position will deliver specialist domestic and family violence supports and services in line with practice principles and standards.

To work as part of the Specialist Domestic and Family Violence team to support people impacted by domestic and family violence.

Appointment:

9 month contract (maternity leave). The Specialist DFV Support Worker is appointed on a full-time basis and is expected to work across the organisation as required. Flexibility of hours may be negotiated to meet operational needs.

Key Requirements:

  • Human services degree (or 5 years’ experience in a similar field will be considered)
  • Demonstrated understanding of domestic and family violence contemporary practices
  • An understanding of the gendered analysis of domestic and family violence and a commitment to a feminist vision for the service.
  • Proven ability to work with people from various cultures and backgrounds
  • Skilled in working with sensitive issues with a high standard of personal integrity
  • Knowledge of counselling and advocacy techniques for people who have been victims of domestic violence, including crisis intervention and case management skills.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills with the ability to negotiate, problem solve, influence and build relationships.
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills with the ability to respond to multiple demands when working under pressure.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Knowledge in human services, community organisations or other related not for profits and the ability to collaborate and build strong partnerships.
  • Current QLD C Class Driver’s License
  • Working with Children Check (Blue Card)

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • To participate in the day-to-day operation of the organisation including:
    • Provision of professional supports to people who have experienced extreme trauma
    • Provision of crisis interventions including safety and risk assessments
    • Ongoing support to clients both in the office, remotely and within the Specialist DFV Court processes
    • Support integrated service responses
    • Other tasks as required to assist clients to meet their goals.
  • Work with clients in an empowering manner, maintaining a responsible and professional approach at all times
  • Deliver services from a feminist analysis and understanding of the gendered nature of domestic and family violence
  • Openly advocate to all that violence and abuse is not acceptable and in some circumstances is a criminal offence
  • Provide a service that is culturally appropriate, respectful and meets client needs
  • Maintain client confidentiality
  • Record client information pursuant to NQDVRS client management system requirements.
  • Work in a professional, collaborative and respectful way with the other team members
  • Along with work colleagues identify emerging trends and raise these for discussion in an appropriate forum
  • Liaise with and build connections and networks as appropriate to assist NQDVRS to meet its goals
  • Participate in a range of community education and awareness activities, and networking within the community, including any local Domestic and Family Violence Action or Networking Groups.
  • Participate in NQDVRS structures such as staff meetings, supervision, staff appraisal, de-briefing and administration processes.
  • Participate, chair and organise team meetings as required.
  • Work within the Policy and Procedures of NQDVRS and follow all workplace health and safety requirements and maintain awareness of personal safety.
  • Undertake any other duties as required to ensure the smith running of the service.
