Who is Northern Suburbs Community Legal Centre (NSCLC) and what makes us different?

We are a not-for-profit community legal centre that aims to provide innovative and dynamic services to enable justice for clients and the community. Our team is made up of solicitors, tenancy advocates, social workers, financial counsellors, financial advocates, older people’s rights advocates, community legal education staff, program support staff and volunteers.

The Older People’s Rights Service (OPRS) is one of the programs provided by NSCLC and offers legal advice, advocacy, peer education sessions and social support to those at risk of or experiencing elder abuse, with a focus on positive ageing. Preference will be given to applicants aged 60 years or older.

About the two volunteer roles available…

Community peer education volunteers

• This volunteer role would suit older people who enjoy public speaking and presenting talks to small and large groups of other older people (peer to peer).
• The role will deliver educational presentations to community groups on topics related to elder abuse prevention and positive ageing.

Intergenerational program volunteers (working with children and young people)

• This volunteer role would suit older people who are interested in speaking with children and young people about preventing ageism and elder abuse.
• The role will deliver a series of interactive educational presentations and activities with children and young people.

Eligibility

You will be required to:

• Commit to volunteering for a minimum of six months.
• Travel independently to various locations.
• Attend volunteer team meetings for 1 hour each month.
• Present to at least one community group per month.
• Provide a National Police Certificate less than 6 months old – other reference checks and screening may be required in certain situations.
• Maintain a valid Driver’s Licence.
• Obtain a current Working with Children’s Check (intergenerational program).
• Attend weekly sessions over the 4-6 weeks of the program (intergenerational program only).
