Director of Research and Policy

James Martin Institute for Public Policy

A unique and rewarding opportunity to join the NSW Public Policy Institute in its start-up phase; leading, developing and delivering our research grants and policy projects, in close partnership with government and leading academic experts.

About the NSW Public Policy Institute

With a generous endowment from the NSW Government and matched funding from a group of NSW universities, the Institute was incorporated as an independent organisation in early 2021. Our founders have set up an independent, enduring institute that will transform how governments and universities harness world-leading research capability through collaborative projects to address key public policy challenges.

The purpose of the Institute is to support governments to deliver pragmatic and smart policy solutions, informed by leading academic research, that will have far reaching benefits for the people of NSW and beyond. Through our partnership model, we bring government, universities, industry and communities together to deliver practical and relevant public policy outcomes through a process of codesign, codelivery and collaboration that will harness leading academic research capability.

The role

The CEO is looking to make this key, newly created appointment – someone who will work closely alongside them to build firm foundations through leading, developing and delivering a program of collaborative research, policy engagement and joint projects. The Institute is looking for an experienced and highly professional public policy expert with strong academic credentials and a deep understanding of how policy decisions are made across government. In a small, start-up organisation, this person will be highly adaptable, motivated and systematic and organised in their approach – building smart processes that will establish firm foundations for the Institute. They will have experience of building strong relationships with government and university colleagues, including at a senior level, and will understand both cultures. If you are passionate about the role of research in public policy and are keen to help build something from the ground up, we would love to hear from you. Sydney CBD office, flexible terms and conditions available and a competitive salary depending on experience.

The NSW Public Policy Institute is committed to meaningful equity and diversity in our organisation and strongly encourage people from a diverse range of backgrounds to apply.
