Volunteers - Mentoring Program

Odyssey House Victoria

We are excited to announce, that in early 2021, Odyssey House Victoria will be introducing a Mentoring Program to support our Leavers, residents nearing the end of their program, on their transition back into the community.

Odyssey House Victoria’s (OHV) adult residential rehabilitation program in Melbourne provides live-in treatment for those with alcohol and other drug problems. Operating as a Therapeutic Community (TC), the values-based program provides a structured environment and encompasses the Community as Method approach.

This involves:

  • Community members all holding roles and responsibilities
  • Continual feedback from peers and staff members
  • Residents and staff acting as Role models
  • Friendships and healthy family-like relationships consistently encouraged
  • Collective learning
  • Hierarchical work structure and communication system
  • Open communication, emotional honesty, and personal disclosure.

OHV is offering a Mentoring Program to support our leavers, and residents nearing the end of their program on their transition back into the community. This stage of the program is often accompanied by an increased risk of relapse and stress as they move away from the safety of the structure provided by living in a residential rehabilitation service to independent decision-making, communication, and contact with the broader community. The aim of this phase is to provide a staged separation from the security of the TC, allowing residents the ability to become confident and productive members of society.

We are seeking empathetic and committed role models, 25 – 65 years of age, who wish to be designated Mentors to provide guidance, assistance, and education to an individual with whom they have been matched. Volunteers will have the necessary skills, knowledge, and a positive attitude towards supporting people during this transitionary phase. We encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people from culturally and linguistically diverse communities, and the LGBTIQA+ community to apply.

The recruitment process involves completing an application form, followed by an interview over Zoom to determine if you are suitable as a volunteer in a mentoring role.

Should you be selected as a volunteer, you will be required to complete a volunteer Working with Children Check and Police Check. You will be reimbursed for your completed police check upon commencement as a volunteer. Comprehensive training will also be provided.

This process is thorough to ensure the safety of all involved in line with OHV’s safety screening and recruitment policies.
