We are seeking a Non-Executive Director for the position of Chairperson of the Board who displays integrity, independence, and ethics. Commercial judgement and business acumen are highly valued, as is being an active contributor with a strong commitment to One Eighty’s mission, vision, goals, and values.

One Eighty has a skills-based Board, and a vacancy has arisen for a new Chairperson with Director/CEO experience to contribute to our strategic vision.

One Eighty is youth mental health done differently. Our mission is to lead the way for peer-to-peer models of community support, raise the profile of exceptional existing services, and reimagine what youth engagement in the NFP sector looks like. One Eighty is focused on local impact through a grass roots, bottom up approach focusing on prevention and early intervention through our flagship programs. Our vision is a future free of youth suicide. One Eighty is an incorporated association and is listed on the register of Harm Prevention Charities with the Australian Dep. of Social Services. One Eighty holds Deductible Gift Recipient Status - 1 (DGR-1). One Eighty acts nationally and holds offices in Sydney.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

The role of the Board is to provide overall strategic guidance and effective oversight for One Eighty.

In 2021-22, the One Eighty Board is undergoing an internal strategic development process to ensure its functions suit the needs of the organisation as we grow from a small to medium sized organisation. With this development, a new Chairperson and Treasurer vacancies have arisen. This is an exciting time to become involved with the organisation, with the opportunity for input in this strategic development. The One Eighty Board is a hybrid management committee, and as such Directors are required to perform some more immediate operational tasks themselves as necessary for the organisation to achieve its goals. This includes active engagement in areas such as fundraising, stakeholder engagement, and mentoring.

  • Board meetings are usually held outside business hours, four to six times per year, often remotely
  • This is a volunteer (unpaid) position
  • Open to applicants nationally
  • Successful applicants will be required to complete a Police check
  • Depending on fit, candidate may also be asked to chair internal subcommittees
  • Minimum 3-year term

ESSENTIAL SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Knowledge of the responsibilities of a Non-Executive Director, including an understanding of the legal, reputational, ethical, fiduciary, and financial responsibilities of Board members.
  • Strategic expertise – the ability to review the strategy through constructive questioning and suggestion and contribute to the effective decision making of the board.
  • Accounting and finance – the ability to read and comprehend the company’s accounts, financial material presented to the board.
  • Risk Management – experience in managing areas of major risk management to the organisation.
  • Legal knowledge – the board’s responsibility involves overseeing compliance with numerous laws as well as understanding the individual director’s legal duties and responsibilities.
  • Director/CEO/senior management experience with comfort around decision making
  • Comfort leveraging personal networks and a propensity to regularly give to the organisation (financially, or in-kind) – this can be a small contribution, however we want all Board members to actively believe in and support our cause
  • Desire and willingness to work alongside and mentor young people on the Board/senior management
  • Willingness and ability to devote time and energy to the role – our Board is very active, functioning partially as a management committee
  • Good company fit, with values aligned to those of One Eighty

HIGHLY DESIRABLE SKILLS AND EXPERTISE

  • Industry knowledge – experience in similar organisations or industries
  • A passion and strong interest in mental health and/or the youth sector
  • Media, marketing, brand, and communications expertise
  • Professional expertise in mental health support or services
  • Medical or clinical expertise including in physical health and wellbeing, psychology, or social work
  • Public policy
  • Research expertise and credentials in a relevant field
  • Mentoring experience
