Original Power are seeking Expression of Interests for an experienced campaigner, community organiser or project manager with a deep commitment to a future powered by community-driven solutions, and a background in building the power of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through collective action.

We are a community-focused, Aboriginal led organisation that builds the collective power of our people and backs our leadership, skills and capacity to genuinely achieve self-determination in our community and on country.

Original Power provides strategic advice and campaign support, facilitates capacity building and connects communities. The demands of climate justice require us to not only confront the climate crisis, but in doing so, build our capacity to ensure we are people who can confront all forms of injustice, determine our own futures and help bring greater control and dignity to our communities.

Our current priorities are: defending Country, particularly in the Northern Territory, by supporting communities to decide which projects they give consent to; supporting the new First Nations Clean Energy Network to grow; and advocating for strong cultural heritage and sacred sites protection for generations to come.

We support First Nations peoples and communities to work together to build collective power, to share lessons and campaign together on shared issues.

Original Power is a growing organisation, with staff working from home around Australia.

The Position

Together with our staff team and partner organisations, you will shape and deliver projects and campaigns that support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to build power and protect country.

Working closely with the Original Power team, you will work in partnership with communities to strategise, plan and implement social change projects that build self-determination.

Your focus will be Original Power’s work in Defence of Country, partnering with communities in the Northern Territory and across Australia to support their efforts to self-determine what happens in their communities and on country. This could include supporting communities wanting to stop fracking on their country, getting behind a community protecting cultural heritage through lobbying decision makers, or supporting Traditional Owners advocating for a renewable energy project.

This work will build connections between our people using organising and campaigning as a way of making change, and sharing the tools and resources needed.

The key responsibilities of the Senior Campaigner include:

  • Working in a team to strategise, plan and implement campaigns/ projects with a community organising approach in partnership with communities
  • Design and deliver a program to recruit, train and motivate a range of people to shape and participate in campaigns in their communities
  • Plan and support on-ground campaign and organising activities, events and tactics to achieve campaign and organisational goals
  • Draft a wide range of high quality material such as written submissions, policy proposals, public presentations, media releases and digital communications
  • Identify changes and adapt strategy as needed to ensure campaigns/projects are successful, including evaluating past activities and lessons learned
  • Participate in fundraising including preparing pitches and project reports.

Responsibilities in this role will be wide-ranging and your day to day work will adapt to what communities need and what it takes to achieve community goals, respond to challenges and solve problems as they arise. You will need to be in a position to travel regularly to key communities across the country, particularly communities in the Northern Territory.

Your skills and experience include:

  • Sound understanding of how social change happens with the ability to develop effective strategies based on your research and analysis of where power lies and how politics works in practice
  • Experience in advocacy, policy development, lobbying and project management, with experience in keeping multiple strands of work running simultaneously and navigating complex and fast-moving issues
  • Creative problem-solving to overcome obstacles and find new solutions as situations change
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, including experience as a spokesperson and proven ability to use the media and social media effectively
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills including experience working with a wide range of stakeholders in complex situations
  • Ability to participate in fundraising including preparing proposals and identifying opportunities for funding support.
