Introduction

As the General Manager, you will be the head of the Phoenix House organisation and accordingly you will be required to be a strong leader with previous experience in a youth case management or education setting. The role will require you to oversee operations, people management, finances, and internal and external communications all with a purpose to lead the team towards maximum productivity and efficiency. You will be required to report and engage with the Phoenix House Board of Directors in a non-voting capacity.

Objectives of the Role

In accordance with the Phoenix House Youth Service Board directions and principles the position will be required to:

  • Collaboratively implement the strategic plan for the next 5 years with the purpose of optimising financial sustainability and achieving efficient productivity;
  • Review Phoenix House Youth Services organisational effectiveness by developing a continuous improvement approach to updating and adapting processes, engaging with, and overseeing staff, establishing a highly motivated work environment and creating innovative approaches for improvement;
  • Uphold standards of excellence in service delivery and industry quality;
  • Seek out opportunities for expansion and growth by developing and maintaining new, strong business relationships; and
  • Provide guidance and feedback to help staff strengthen specific knowledge and skills areas.

Key Responsibilities

As the leader driving business operations, the role will:

  • Oversee day to day operations, assigning weekly performance goals and assuring their completion, while accomplishing your own goals;
  • Maintain established timelines to ensure tasks are completed on time to the required standard;
  • Develop, implement and maintain budgetary and resource allocation plans;
  • Delegate responsibilities to the appropriate staff members to achieve efficient and effective delivery of the service;
  • Resolve internal conflicts efficiently and to the mutual benefit of those involved.

Role Capability

The role is expected to:

  • Execute strong and clear decision making;
  • Maintain a high level of communication, collaboration and delegation with staff and others;
  • Develop and maintain financial plans and carry out the duties in an ethical and compliant manner;
  • Motivate and lead Phoenix House Youth Services people including ensure they understand and accept individual accountability;
  • Maintain a strong oversight and understanding of the current and required operational procedures; and
  • Delivery and maintain a fit for purpose performance evaluation system.

Selection Criteria

The following are the five major criterion for the role and need to be addressed in the candidate’s 600 word statement as part of the application requirements. The criteria include:

  1. Demonstrated inclusive leadership experience in an education, counselling or case management environment.
  2. Sound collaborative and consultative approach with staff and clients.
  3. Strong relationship management skills with stakeholders and partners.
  4. Proven innovation and continuous improvement activities.
  5. Tertiary qualifications in education or psychology or related field.

Duties

Board Reporting (30%)

  • Report and engage with the Board (and Subcommittees, as required) including regular meetings on financial and strategic objectives. Please note this position while regularly engaging with the Board does not hold voting rights.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain budgetary and resource allocation plans.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain the Phoenix House strategic plan, in collaboration and consultation with the board of directors.
  • Maintain established timelines to ensure tasks are completed on time to the required standard.

Professional Engagement and Staff Management (30%)

  • Dependent on the skill set of the incumbent, management of both, and direct, professional participation within either:
    • Phoenix House's education programs; or
    • Phoenix House's case management (social work) programs.
  • Oversee day to day operations, assigning weekly performance goals and assuring their completion, while accomplishing your own goals.
  • Delegate responsibilities to the appropriate staff members to achieve efficient and effective delivery of the service.
  • Resolve internal conflicts efficiently and to the mutual benefit of those involved.

Fundraising and Stakeholder Engagement (40%)

  • Development, and management of the fundraising pipeline and strategy, in collaboration with the Fundraising Subcommittee.
  • Engagement with stakeholders at key points in the conversion pipeline.
  • Management, target-setting, and measurement for fundraising staff against fundraising goals.
  • Oversight of the grant-writing process, and submission of documentation to relevant bodies.
