Must be available Monday and Thursday, have good communication and organisational skills, an understanding of youth issues and the ability to communicate effectively with young people from diverse backgrounds. The person should have or be studying towards relevant tertiary qualifications.
The Port Kembla Youth Project is a not-for-profit community organisation that provides information and support to young people aged 12-24. Programs focus on providing opportunities for skills development, engagement, mentorship and resilience building, recognising the cultural diversity of our local area.
We work with young people in Port Kembla and surrounding suburbs including Kemblawarra, Primbee, Warrawong and Windang PKYP works with young people (12-24 yrs) in the Port Kembla geographic area. Developing their resilience and emotional confidence to address issues of social and economic disadvantage and help them find positive pathways for the next stage of their lives.
To work with young people between the ages of 12-24 years by maintaining existing programs and plan and implement new programs for the area. Must be available Monday and Thursday. Probationary period applies.
The position involves working with young people and therefore it is an offence under the NSW Child Protection (Prohibited Employment) Act 1998 for a person convicted of a serious sex offence to apply for this position.

I’M A STUDENT, CAN I STILL APPLY? Yes. Port Kembla Youth Project requires the youth development worker to have tertiary qualifications (or be studying towards) in related fields. The successful applicant must always be available Mondays and Thursdays between the hours of 11am - 4pm.
WHAT QUALIFICATIONS MUST I HAVE? The Youth Development Worker role requires a person who has a base knowledge in youth development work and or welfare. Typical qualifications may include a Certificate IV or Diploma in Youth Work or Community Services, a degree in Psychology, Teaching or Social Sciences. It is okay to still be studying in these qualifications, however you must supply a copy of your transcript if requested.
DO I NEED EXPERIENCE AS A YOUTH DEVELOPMENT WORKER? Not necessary. While youth work experience is highly regarded, the Port Kembla Youth Project is seeking applicants with the following qualities: passionate about helping young people, quick learner, ability to work independently, strong organisational skills, highly professional with strong relationship building skills and skills in conflict resolution. If you don’t have experience in youth development work but can demonstrate these qualities, we welcome you to apply.
