Community Engagement and Field Coordinator - Newman

Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa

Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa (KJ) is a Martu organisation established in 2005 to look after Martu culture and help build sustainable Martu communities. Martu are the traditional owners of the Martu native title determination and Karlamilyi National Park, spanning three desert bioregions and 15 million hectares. KJ works with Martu to build strong, sustainable communities in a manner that is Martu-focused and recognises and reinforces Martu values.

KJ’s on country work provides a foundation for many of KJ’s activities. It provides many Martu families with a major source of income, but also grounds a great deal of Martu engagement, pride and identity. On country work realises ubiquitous Martu aspirations: getting back to their traditional country, passing on knowledge and culture to younger generations, actively looking after country to make it healthy again and making Martu communities sustainable for the long term.

In line with KJ’s Country, Culture and Communities (CCC) framework and five-year strategic plan, KJ’s on country work encompasses a diverse array of activities and includes opportunities for Martu to access country for cultural, environmental, educational and social engagement and learning.

The Community Engagement Coordinator (CEC) will have specific responsibility for facilitating the on-country work by the Martu team in one Martu community. The CEC is a visible and accessible figure in community and will be critical to the operational success of KJ’s programs and delivery of the cultural outcomes and aspirations of Martu. The objectives of the role include:

  • Orient all KJ’s on-country activities for the community with a Martu worldview – particularly working within the CCC framework
  • Provide the means by which Martu can engage with country and fulfil cultural obligations
  • Support Martu to increase their capacity to accept greater responsibility and leadership for on-country work
  • Provide guidance, developmental support and logistical assistance for Martu to build their capacity to lead Martu-only, on-country trips
  • Organise KJ’s on-country work around specific activities – informed by Martu cultural, societal and spiritual aspirations and KPIs, as well as company aspirations and KPIs

This is a full time permanent role reporting to the Executive Director, Strategy Country and Culture and General Manager Program Delivery.

The position of CEC will be based in one of the four Martu communities – Jigalong, Punmu, Parnngurr or Kunawarritji – however will also participate in regular scheduled “off-country” periods in Newman for training and wellbeing initiatives.
