The Senior Policy Officer, Closing the Gap provides strategic policy advice to support QATSICPP in shaping the policy environment to create positive change for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families. The role will contribute significantly to QATSICPP’s approach to ensuring Queensland is on track to achieve the Close the Gap targets and the implementation of the new priority areas.

An integral function of this role is to support the CEO’s involvement in the partnership committee and codesign with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peaks and government partners, legislation, policy and program initiatives that will improve outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families.

This work will include:

  • Reviewing Queensland’s Implementation Plan and developing comprehensive briefs
  • Developing reports on what changes are needed in the service systems i.e. health, youth justice, domestic and family violence, child protection, education and housing to improve outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Supporting QATSICPP to contribute views to the ongoing National Agreement processes at a state and national level
  • Exploring links and opportunities for broader policy and advocacy initiatives with Commonwealth and State Governments.
  • Engaging with our members to ensure QATSICPP policy positions are informed by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community controlled organisations.

The Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child Protection Peak is the peak body representing, advocating and supporting the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child protection and family support sector in Queensland.

We provide leadership in advocacy and the development of policies, strategies and programs to resource, support and strengthen the capacity and capability of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled organisations in the interests of our children, families and communities.

Requirements for the role

  • To perform this role, it is essential that the person is an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person. It is therefore a genuine occupational requirement under section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 (QLD)
  • A current valid Queensland Working with Children's Card (Blue Card) is required prior to commencement of employment
  • Drivers Licence
  • Occasional travel throughout Queensland is a part of this role
  • A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and/or significant experience in complex policy environments.
  • Full COVID-19 vaccination is required
