  • Salary: Depending on experience and qualifications – Level 3 to 5 ($64,299 -$86,529) Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award plus superannuation. Salary sacrificing available
  • Reports to: Regional Coordinator, North Queensland
  • Contract: Fixed term for 12 Months. Minimum 15.2 hours per week (up to 30.4 hrs – 45.6 hrs per fortnight)

Role Purpose

The primary purpose of this role is to support young people from refugee backgrounds to heal, belong and thrive in a just Australian community. You will be engaging with young people from refugee backgrounds living in Townsville to co-create and co-deliver a youth leadership program which focuses on enhancing a sense of inclusion and belonging and mentoring opportunities.


  1. Develop and maintain positive relationships with young people from refugee backgrounds and their families.
  2. Support a group of young people to co-design and participate in a youth leadership project that will focus on issues and solutions identified by the young people.
  3. Provide one-on-one support to young people from refugee backgrounds. This will include writing assessments, implementing interventions responsive to the needs and aspirations of young people, linking and referring to other agencies when appropriate, identifying and managing risks (including risk of self-harm and suicide ideation).
  4. Advocate for young people within internal and external systems.
  5. Provide psychoeducation to enable young people and their families to understand and engage with recovery-focused support.
  6. Co-develop and facilitate group work and events.
  7. Ensure quality service delivery, including accountability with contractual requirements. This includes the writing of case notes and documentation of interventions delivered.
  8. Build and foster collaborative partnerships with stakeholders.
  9. Abide by the vision and values of QPASTT, including our Code of Conduct as well as the policies and procedures of the organisation.
  10. Support research and evaluation initiatives of the organisation.


This role is designed for young people from refugee backgrounds with relevant experience.

  1. Demonstrated experience working with young people, particularly from a refugee background, and delivering culturally safe support.
  2. Strong understanding of the impacts of trauma and structural inequality when working with marginalized young people, or those at risk of being marginalised.
  3. Ability to respond to needs of young people and their families, and engage them in creating and implementing interventions.
  4. Desirable – certificate, diploma or degree level qualifications in Youth Work, Individualised Support, Social Work, Human Services, Community Work, Education, Psychology, Occupational Therapy or related area of expertise.
  5. Desirable – activity and project management skills.
  6. Desirable – great sense of humour!

Conditions of Employment

  1. Current Positive Notice Blue Card and provision of an annual federal police check.
  2. Current Queensland C Class driver’s licence.
  3. Occasional out of hours work. Occasional travel to other QPASTT offices.
  4. The period of probation will be six months.
