Queensland Shelter, a Peak Body for Affordable Housing and Homelessness, is currently recruiting for a Media & Communications Manager to join our passionate, high-performing team. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, this role will be based at our Brisbane office in Spring Hill, on the CBD fringe.

We are looking for a communications expert with media / journalism experience, to support engagement with government, the media, our members and other sector stakeholders, to promote affordable housing and homelessness solutions.

The ideal candidate will:

  • be an excellent writer with strategic and creative flare
  • have strong experience engaging with media and government advisors
  • have experience delivering Influencer or Ambassador campaigns
  • have experience working with Adobe Creative Suite, Mailchimp, WordPress, Video editing software, CRM and Membership Software Platforms
  • be a team player, who focuses on building a great team culture
  • be passionate about improving affordable housing solutions in Queensland

Key responsibilities

  • Implement Q Shelter’s Strategic Engagement & Communications Strategy
  • Use communication strategies to enhance Q Shelter’s profile & reputation
  • Implement Q Shelter’s Membership Strategy
  • Manage membership & communication activities, to the allocated budget
  • Lead and manage one direct report

Qualifications and Experience

  • Tertiary qualifications in Communications, Journalism or similar desirable
  • Minimum of five-years’ media and communications’ experience, including a minimum of three-years leading the delivery of media and communications
  • Experience engaging with media and ministerial advisors highly desirable
  • Strong Information Technology and digital communication skills desirable
  • Experience with WordPress and website management / rebuilds desirable, but not essential
  • Experience in the Sector desirable, but not essential.

The role is 0.6 FTE – 22.8 hours per week, with some potential for increased hours within the first 12 months, by mutual agreement.

Q Shelter offers a flexible work environment. The role falls within the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award and is graded level 6.1 ($46.91 per hour, or $55,616 per annum, exclusive of superannuation and annual leave loading). Q Shelter employees receive five weeks annual leave per year (pro-rata for part time) and a paid Christmas shutdown period. Q Shelter staff also have access to not-for-profit salary packaging, which increases their take home pay.

Q Shelter staff are expected to work within a culturally safe framework and actively contribute to the implementation of Q Shelter’s emerging Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan.

About Q Shelter

Q Shelter is a peak body for the Queensland affordable housing and homelessness sector (“Sector”). It plays an important role delivering projects to assist in the implementation of the Queensland Government Housing Strategy 2017-27 and the Queensland Housing and Homelessness Action Plan 2021-25.

It is a member-based association, overseen by a Management Committee, focused on:

  • building the Sector’s capacity, to deliver evidence-based solutions to housing and homelessness needs;
  • influencing public policy and programs, to achieve housing and homelessness solutions; and
  • investing in its owns resources and systems, as a base to improve its services to the Sector.
