Rainforest Rescue

  • Reports to: Daintree Nursery Manager
  • Type: Casual (3 positions)
    • Position 1 – expected to be 5 days per week
    • Position 2 – expected to be 3 days per week
    • Position 3 – expected to be 2 days per week
  • Commencement date: September - October 2022
  • Pay rate: Grade 2 of Nursery Award ($27.94 per hour including all casual loadings)

Purpose of the Position

The purpose of these positions is to support the preservation and restoration of endangered rainforest in the Daintree region at the direction of senior staff. The positions will commence on a casual basis with the possibility of permanent part-time or full-time work for the right candidates.

Core Responsibilities

  • General nursery duties i.e., potting, propagating, weeding, watering, moving stock
  • Identifying target species and preparing products for dispatch including plant quality control
  • Production line work
  • Maintaining a clean working environment and general maintenance
  • Safe handling of products and equipment (training will be provided as needed)
  • Sharing knowledge and skills and representing the organisation inside and outside of the nursery
  • Recording, entering and editing data electronically and on paper
  • Assisting with the coordination of volunteers
  • Compliance with WHS procedures and directions from senior staff to ensure a safe and healthy working environment, including ensuring volunteers and visitors to Rainforest Rescue work sites are advised of correct safety procedures
  • Regional travel and some out of hour’s work may be required

SELECTION CRITERIA

Essential

  • Plant knowledge
  • Pests, diseases and plant nutrition knowledge
  • Ability to understand watering requirements and to use and maintain irrigation systems
  • Good time management and the ability to plan and prioritise tasks
  • Aspiration to progress and learn
  • Safe manual handling and lifting
  • Must be fit, active and able to stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to and ease with working unsupervised and within a team including efficient communication
  • Keen eye for detail, respectful and have a strong desire to work
  • Enjoy working in outdoor environments in all weather conditions
  • Willingness to assist in other areas of the company
  • A commitment to rainforest conservation and the environment
  • Have your own reliable vehicle and a current driver’s licence
  • Willingness to undertake Working with Children check

Desirable

  • Previous nursery experience
  • Experience working with Traditional Owners
  • Horticulture Certificate, Current First Aid Certificate and/or Blue Card (Working with Children)
  • Previous experience in and/or an understanding and appreciation of not-for-profit environment sector

About the team

Rainforest Rescue’s work and staff are located within Eastern Kuku Yalanji country (Daintree area), on Arakwal (Byron Bay), Minjungbal (Tweed Heads) and Widjabul (Lismore) country within Bundjalung Nation, and Meanjin country (Brisbane) within Turrbal Nation.

We are a small organisation of 10 people, supported by a group of passionate volunteers, expert advisors and an experienced board. Our land management and nursery team are based in the Daintree rainforest (Julay Madja). While our operations team is based in Byron Bay, NSW. We also have staff in Brisbane and pro-bono partners in NSW and QLD.
