Immersion Program Leaders

Red Earth Organisation

POSITION OVERVIEW

Have you dreamed of combining your love for outdoor education with a passion for Indigenous culture and remote travel?

Red Earth is seeking enthusiastic, experienced outdoor guides, instructors and facilitators to join our growing family as Immersion Leaders in 2022.

RED EARTH ORGANISATION

We are a small social enterprise with 16 employees passionate about connecting groups of high school students to remote Indigenous Australia. We do this by building immersion programs: ten-day trips into remote Indigenous communities and homelands where small groups learn from Elders, visit cultural sites, and contribute to a service project in the community.

What will you be doing as a Leader with Red Earth?

The Red Earth vision sees young people from cities deeply connecting with Traditional Owners. We know that careful planning and skilled facilitation are needed to make these magical moments happen, and that is where our Red Earth Leaders come in. As a Leader, you will be the bridge between the school group and the Traditional Owners, making sure the relationships can grow by ensuring everything else is looked after. This includes:

  • Liaising with Traditional Owners to organise activities during the immersion
  • Ensuring all activity equipment is present, so the sessions run seamlessly
  • Providing first aid and emergency support for the group
  • Assisting with the management of food
  • Organising and managing camping equipment
  • Facilitating daily reflection and experiential learning

EXPERIENCE AND SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Leaders will be required to travel to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or Perth for pre-departure events and training. Immersions will take place in Cape York, Central Australia, Arnhem Land/Top End, and Lake Mungo.
  • Be available for a group interview in late November/early December 2021
  • Be 21 years or older on 1 April 2022
  • Hold a Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation (or higher)
  • Have a minimum 2-years experience working in the outdoor, education or guiding industry
  • Hold a full manual drivers’ licence
  • Be eligible to get a Working with Children Check
  • Be available to attend a Leader Training Weekend in 2022
  • Be available to travel on ideally 2+ immersions in 2022
