The Senior Relationship Services (SRS) program within Relationships Australia Northern Territory (RA-NT) provides case management, counselling and mediation to older people who are at risk of, or experiencing, ‘elder abuse’, and their families/support persons. The primary target group for the service is Australians aged 65 years and older, and Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Australians aged 50 years and older. This program is a 3-year pilot initiative (also known as the ‘Elder Abuse Service Trials’ or EAST) under the National Plan to Respond to the Abuse of Older Australians 2019 – 2023, with initial funding due to end on 30 June 2022.

Selection Criteria

Essential:

  • Tertiary qualification in Social Work, Psychology or Counselling equivalent
  • Eligibility for membership of relevant professional association (e.g. AASW, APS, ACA, PACFA)
  • Demonstrated case management experience in a human/community services context, including being able to engage clients in person and by telephone, undertake screening/assessments and identify/source referral options to access appropriate services and support.
  • Experience relevant to the provision of support and counselling to older people (and their support persons/carers), including knowledge and understanding of trauma-informed practice and factors contributing to the abuse of older people.
  • Demonstrated capacity to maintain confidentiality when dealing with sensitive client information.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute positively to a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Experience in the provision of services to Indigenous and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse clients, and a willingness to participate in cross-cultural training and events.
  • Ability to undertake liaison and networking with the community, service providers and Government agencies, including the ability to provide information sessions to promote the service and raise awareness about elder abuse.
  • A high level of written and verbal communication skills, as well as good administrative abilities and experience in the use of computer databases for accurate data collection and record keeping.
  • Willingness to uphold RA-NT values and to comply with workplace policy and Code of Conduct and a commitment to ongoing professional development.

Desirable:

  • Experience in mediation and knowledge of how mediation can be used to support older people in their relationships with families/carers.

Requirements:

  • Possession of a current NT Driver’s License (for outreach work).
  • A satisfactory Northern Territory Working With Children Check.
  • A satisfactory National Criminal History Check.
  • A commitment to RA-NT’s Safeguarding Children Practice and Behaviour Guidelines.
