Research Australia is the national peak body for health and medical research. We are a member-based organisation representing all stages of health and medical research including universities, medical research institutes, consumer groups, hospitals, health insurers, medical technology, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals. 

We are seeking a Senior Government Relations Adviser to create political engagement opportunities for our members and help manage relationships with state and federal politicians from across the political spectrum as well as government departments.

About the Role 

Reporting to the General Manager, the Senior Government Relations Advisor is responsible for: 

  • Identifying opportunities to use Research Australia’s policy work as a platform for meaningful engagement with Ministers and backbenchers at both state and federal levels.  
  • Contributing to high-quality reports and briefing material on emerging issues in health and medical research and disseminating material to government.
  • Managing (with team support) Roundtable forums and other political engagement events. 
  • Supporting the CEO and General Manager in political engagement through the preparation of briefing materials, speeches and correspondence. 

This position sits within the Government Relations Team and works closely with the Head of Policy and the Partnerships and Marketing Manager to help promote the right policy settings for a flourishing health and medical research sector and communicate the needs of our members to government. 

About You 

To be successful in this role, you will have tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline such as public policy, international relations, communications, economics or law with previous experience in government, an advocacy body or a similar policy role. Previous experience as an electorate officer highly regarded. 

You will have a demonstrated understanding of the workings of government. Experience in the current political and policy landscape in Australia as it relates to health policy is an advantage. 

Your highly motivated and action-oriented working style will be combined with exceptional communications and influencing skills and the ability to independently manage multiple priorities and work collaboratively as a part of a small team to deliver timely outcomes. This is a stepping stone role with the opportunity for mentoring and training.
