Volunteer Board Non-Executive Director

Reverse Garbage

Reverse Garbage Co-Operative Ltd (Reverse Garbage) is one of Australia’s longest running social enterprises and is a leader in creative reuse and education as part of the circular economy. As we approach our 50th Birthday this is an exciting time to be involved in supporting one of Sydney’s best loved creative reuse and environmental organisations.

We are looking for a new board member (Non-Executive Director) to fill a casual vacancy and join our existing dynamic board (total 9 positions). You will share our vision and values and will be integral in helping Reverse Garbage (RG) to continue to grow and expand our education, community and public education programs as well as advocate for the social, environmental and economic benefits of reuse.

Role

We are seeking well connected people who are passionate about our organisation’s vision and mission, have knowledge of not-for-profit (NFP) governance, are willing to act as an ambassador for Reverse Garbage and have the expertise and time to contribute. We are looking for NEDs who can demonstrate skills and experience, including:

  • Experience in the NFP sector, either at management or board level
  • Interest and an understanding of reuse, sustainability and circular economy principles
  • Knowledge of Board and NFP governance responsibilities and accountabilities
  • Ability to think strategically and contribute to effective oversight of the CEO in delivering Strategic Plan
  • Ability to positively contribute to the effective and efficient operation of the Board
  • Be a member or join the co-operative as a member

Commitment

The successful applicant will be someone who is prepared to have the commitment for consistent attendance and active engagement at monthly board meetings at our Marrickville home (80% attendance required, can be attended on-line if required).

Monthly board meetings are usually two hours (last Thursday evening of the month) and there is some out of session correspondence, an annual strategy meeting (1 day), the Annual General Meeting as well as other engagements as necessary.

The term for Board Directors is three years. Since this is a casual vacancy the successful applicant will hold office until the next Annual General Meeting and then will need to nominate for election at the next Annual General Meeting (November 2024) for election for a three-year term.
