Proudly serving Australians since 1928, the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) provides emergency aero medical and health services for people in rural and remote Australia. RFDS Victoria supports the work of the Flying Doctor throughout Australia and is also growing its services across the State.

In Victoria the RFDS works in partnership with a number of community health organisations across the State to improve the health and well-being of our rural and regional communities. We believe in creating opportunities so all Victorians have the choice to access essential primary health care services. Each year we come into contact with over 80,000 patients throughout Victoria, this includes primary health care and transport by air or on the road.

5 x Casual and Permanent positions available, candidates must be prepared to work a mixture of on road and air.

The Role

The purpose of the flight nurse is to provide quality patient care for an individual or group of patients, using evidence based practice and according to the NEPTS Protocols and standards of the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Triaging of patient’s and providing clinical care of patients prior, during and after flights, whilst also providing administrative assistance and ground duties.

Key tasks and responsibilities

  • Liaise with the Essendon Base Administrator, RFDS Pilot and MPC Control Room to co-ordinate the Aeromedical transportation of patients
  • Ensure thorough pre-flight assessment of clients to ensure that patients fit within NEPTS protocols and identify medical factors which may require special consideration during the aeromedical transport in conjunction with the referring hospital Medical Staff / Nursing staff or RFDS Clinician
  • Ensure that in-flight care remains at optimal levels and initiate where appropriate, the necessary actions to reduce or prevent actual or potential risk to the client in accordance with defined policies. This will include the condition, observations and other facts relating to diagnosis and management of clients
  • Maintain and demonstrate a proficiency in aviation, flight nursing competencies and currencies; Communicate with pilots to ensure optimal physiological environment for the maintenance of the patients’ optimal clinical condition with no compromise to aircraft safety
  • Be able to work as the sole nursing practitioner on the majority of flights
  • Be able to transition to on-road work as required to service patient transfer to and from the aircraft or during downtime when there are no flights
  • Have the ability to remain calm and take initiative in emergency situations
  • Undertake additional duties associated with routine administration and ground based flight preparation
  • Maintain a safe environment and ensuring that all appropriate safety regulations are adhered to, both inflight and within the vicinity of the aircraft whilst airside
  • Remain familiar with aircraft and vehicle layout and operations and having a thorough knowledge of the medical equipment on board
  • Demonstrate proficiency and maintenance of mandatory aircraft safety competency requirements i.e. Cabin Safety (CAO2011) and Dangerous Good

Key Selection Criteria

Essential Qualifications

  • Relevant registration with AHPRA and Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia
  • Post Registration Critical Care ICU / ED Qualifications

Desirable

  • Aviation Nursing
  • Post-registration qualifications in Midwifery

Experience / Knowledge / Abilities

  • Previous aeromedical experience preferred
  • The ability to take initiative in emergency situations
  • Familiar with relevant state Drugs and Poisons Regulations, Controlled Substances Acts etc.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Ability to work as the sole practitioner and with minimal supervision
  • Work collaboratively with external service providers
  • Familiar with relevant state Drugs and Poisons Regulations, Controlled Substances Acts etc.
  • Self-motivated with good organisational, time management and confident decision making abilities.
  • Minimum 4 years postgraduate acute nursing experience including Critical Care Nursing (ICU or Emergency)
  • Ability to demonstrate and maintain advanced clinical practice skills / competencies e.g. BLS, ACLS (Adult and Child)
  • Must be able to adjust to constantly changing work levels/ shifts resulting from diversions, varying patient numbers and conditions

Working knowledge of Non-Emergency Patient Transport Guidelines and RFDS policies on Aeromedical transport as outlined in the RFDS Health Services.
