SANE’s Board is a skills-mix board, and a vacancy has arisen for a new director with legal expertise to contribute to our strategic vision as a Non-Executive Director of SANE Australia and The Dax Centre.

Australians affected by complex mental health issues – such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, complex trauma, and severe depression and anxiety – experience major barriers in accessing quality, affordable support, and face high levels of stigma and discrimination. SANE is committed to changing this reality through its digital and phone counselling, peer support services, arts programming and services, and advocacy and research programs. This is an exciting time to join SANE, as it embarks on its biggest growth and transformation in 35 years under a new CEO and leadership team.

About this opportunity SANE is a company limited by guarantee, and a registered charity with offices in Melbourne and Sydney.

The Dax Centre is part of SANE group and operates with a mirror board.

The role of the Board is to provide overall strategic guidance for SANE Australia and effective oversight SANE’s mission is realised.

In 2021, with a new Chair and CEO, SANE is embarking on the development of a forward roadmap and new Strategic Plan, this is an exciting time to become involved.

  • Board meetings are held during business hours, six times per year, often remotely
  • Board subcommittees meet quarterly
  • This is a volunteer (unpaid) position
  • Open to applicants nationally
  • Travel and other agreed expenses are covered by SANE Australia
  • Successful applicants will be required to complete a Police check

Essential selection criteria

  • Knowledge of the responsibilities of a Non-Executive Director, including an understanding of the legal, ethical, fiduciary, and financial responsibilities of Board members.
  • Legal expertise – the board’s responsibility involves overseeing compliance with numerous laws as well as understanding the individual director’s legal duties and responsibilities.
  • Strategic expertise – the ability to review the strategy through constructive questioning and suggestion and contribute to the effective decision making of the board.
  • Accounting and finance – the ability to read and comprehend the company’s accounts, financial material presented to the board
  • Risk Management – experience in managing areas of major risk management to the organisation

Highly desirable skills and expertise

  • Industry knowledge – experience in similar organisations or industries.
  • A passion and strong interest in mental health
  • Expertise in improving cultural diversity
  • Expertise in the creative Arts or cultural institution management
  • Media, marketing, brand, and communications expertise
  • Professional expertise in mental health support or services
  • Medical or clinical expertise including in physical health and wellbeing, psychology, or social work
  • Public policy
  • Lived experience advocacy, research or professional expertise in intellectual, cognitive disability or autism
  • Research expertise and credentials in a relevant field
  • Expertise in Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islander social and emotional wellbeing
