SA Unions is South Australia’s united trades and labour council, the peak voice for the South Australian union movement. The council collectively represents approximately 160,000 union members in industries right across SA, from hospitality to the public sector, from construction to policing, from nurses and ambulance officers to abattoir workers and teachers.

Role description

The Coordinator - Policy and Industrial Services works with multiple stakeholders across the South Australian union movement, and key government and industrial stakeholders, to:

  1. Develop SA Unions policy positions,
  2. Prepare responses to significant and emerging industrial issues,
  3. Develop submissions which advance SA Union’s strategic interests,
  4. Provide advice on and manage industrial matters;

This role also supports SA Unions’ network of committees, facilitating their connection with the development of SA Unions policy and campaigns.

Successful applicants must be able to build and maintaining relationships with industrial stakeholder organisations and draft submissions to inquiries. You will need to be able to identify opportunities for engagement which advances SA Unions strategic industrial goals, providing content for media releases and stakeholder updates and prepare applications, evidence, and written submissions to industrial tribunals from time to time.

Selection criteria

  • Prior experience working for a trade union or in an in-house role with exposure to industrial relations or employment law.
  • Legal qualifications and experience, or demonstrated industrial officer experience, including advocating before industrial tribunals.
  • Experience drafting submissions to Parliamentary committees and inquiries.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to produce high quality plans and reports.
  • A sound understanding and working knowledge of the Federal and State Fair Work Acts and relevant workplace legislation.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and negotiation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and deliver work programs.
  • Demonstrated commitment to union values and integrity.
  • Knowledge of Labor Council and ACTU structures and activities.
  • Familiarity with union coverage and priorities in South Australia.

Salary and conditions

Permanent Part Time at 0.6 FTE

Salary: $96,000 full-time equivalent, negotiable based on experience.

Reporting to the Secretary, SA Unions.

Employment conditions subject to the SA Unions Enterprise Agreement.

Flexible working arrangements and attractive leave entitlements including 12 rostered days off per year, Christmas shutdown leave and 4 weeks annual leave.

Whilst the position is based in the Adelaide CBD, staff have access to remote working options.
