Hands on Learning School Support Manager - Flexible Location

Save The Children

Lead the expansion, impact and quality assurance of the Hands on Learning (HoL) program in schools in New South Wales. For 22 years, this innovative education program has been proven to significantly increase wellbeing, attendance, improve vocational and academic pathways, and reduce youth unemployment. In this exciting role, your passion for supporting young people will drive HoL's growth across the state. You'll play in a key role in ensuring that the young people who could benefit most have the opportunity to access a quality HoL program at their school.

Save the Children is no ordinary not-for-profit.

We're ambitious, creative and outspoken. We stand up for children's rights. We want all children to be educated, healthy and live a life free from violence. Save the Children has been creating better lives for children in New South Wales since we opened our first pre-school in 1962. See here for more information on our work across New South Wales.

Where you come in

In this part-time, fixed term position (ideally 4 days per week through to mid December 2022, with potential for extension - we'll consider 3 days if preferred), you'll drive the growth and implementation of the HoL program in New South Wales. The school-based program uses a variety of practical projects to re-engage students in their education and with their school and community. You'll liaise directly with schools, and you'll act as mentor to the HoL artisan-teachers who support students to complete building, landscaping, public art, café and team building activities. As part of our Schools Education Engagement team, you'll report to our National Partnerships Manager.

Location for the position is flexible, though we would prefer a base in regional NSW north of Sydney - such as Newcastle, Dubbo or Port Macquarie. Your work will be reasonably evenly split between your home office base and visiting current and prospective partner schools, with a supplied vehicle.

You will make an impact by:

  • Proactively driving the expansion of HoL in New South Wales
  • Building lasting relationships with school leadership and a wide range of stakeholders, including community and other organisations
  • Delivering professional development to HoL artisan-teachers and teams
  • Supporting the quality assurance of HoL implementations
  • Building informal collegiate networks to facilitate sharing, learning and collaboration

Does this sound like you?

You're a self-starter, with a 'can do' attitude and a first-hand understanding of how schools work. You're comfortable and confident presenting in front of groups, and you'll relish the challenge of both building the capacity of the team and boosting HoL's profile across the state. Your dynamic and engaging personality will see you easily build relationships with school leadership teams, and your warmth and integrity will inspire talented HoL artisans-teachers to achieve ambitious outcomes for the young people they support.

This role requires:

  • Strong knowledge of schools and the education sector in New South Wales
  • Knowledge and appreciation of the purpose of education and a student-centred approach
  • Proven first-hand experience and understanding of schools and the way they operate, including wellbeing practices and programs within schools
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Current driver's licence
  • Ideally, completion of a relevant tertiary level qualification in teaching, social work or a related field

Working at Save the Children is more than just a job

It's the feeling of knowing that your work is contributing to making the world a better place for children and working with others who feel the same. In addition to a connection to social causes, you will have access to:

  • 6 weeks of annual leave
  • Full salary packaging benefits
  • Fully maintained car for work travel
  • Agile work environment including working from home
  • Opportunity to work on additional projects alongside business as usual
  • Individual learning plans to assist in your career development
  • Internal employment and development opportunities
