We need you to engage journalists across print, broadcast, online and social media to drive interest in Save the Children's work at home and overseas. You will help position us as an authoritative voice on children's rights, and a leading agency in humanitarian emergencies. You have a nose for news, thrive on pressure, and have the drive to make a difference for children.

Where you come in:

In this full-time permanent position, based in our Carlton office*, you will work on media releases, opinion pieces, and reports that capture the attention of journalists and editors. You will be part of our high-performing Campaigns and Public Affairs team in our Policy and Advocacy Department.

You will make an impact by:

  • Writing powerful pieces that capture the work we do for children
  • Being a key contact for Australian media on child rights issues, including during humanitarian emergencies
  • Building strong relationships with journalists, including foreign correspondents
  • Understanding the power of media to effect systematic change for children
  • Breaking down complex issues and adapting them for a variety of audiences
  • Working with children and their families to amplify their voices in the media

You are highly motivated, creative, and innovative. You thrive in high pressure, fast moving, and sometimes ambiguous situations. You love nothing more than to bounce ideas around with a supportive team. You have an eye for a good yarn and understand what a journalist needs, and you're eager to try new things to get results because you want to make a real difference for children.

This role requires:

  • A degree in journalism, communications, or similar
  • Significant experience in a relevant field or industry
  • Willingness to deploy overseas including to some tough humanitarian contexts, and be on-call on weekends and during holidays
  • Skills to build and maintain media networks at a national, regional and local level
  • Exceptional communications skills in all forms, including multimedia
  • Experience using media for advocacy, including social media
  • A good understanding of Australian politics

Position Description - Media Adviser

*While COVID-19 social distancing restrictions are in place, this role works remotely (i.e. from home or an alternative location). Once the pandemic restrictions are lifted, the role will be based in our office in Carlton.
