The Family Peer Support Worker will work as part of the emerge service.

The worker will utilise their personal experience of caring or supporting a family member or loved one with a mental illness to support families and carers of young people accessing emerge services.

The Family Peer Support Worker will draw from a strengths based recovery orientated model of care and act as a role model towards recovery. In addition, the Family Peer Support Worker will work collaboratively with emerge staff.

The worker will provide peer support to families and significant others of young people being seen within the emerge service, to enhance and maintain their treatment within a primary care setting. The workers will also assist families/carers to access coordinated care and appropriate services via supported referral pathways.

The overall aim of the Peer Support Program is to draw upon own lived experience of being a family member/carer of an individual experiencing a mental difficulties in order to:

  • Provide and hold hope, inspiration and empowerment for recovery
  • De-stigmatise mental health difficulties
  • Provide opportunities for young people and staff to benefit from collective wisdom

Ideally the successful applicant will have a certificate IV in Mental Health / Peer Work or equivalent, however Sonder are committed to supporting individuals reach qualifications required for this role and can discuss the incumbent working towards the certificate rather than already achieved.

Carers of previous clients of the Early Psychosis program are eligible to apply for this role, if the young person have been exited from the program for at least 3 months.
