In 2020, The South Australian Government announced a significant reform agenda for the homelessness sector. In response the Toward Home Alliance was formed by some of the most experienced agencies working within the sector. The Toward Home Alliance brings together Aboriginal Community Services, Baptist Care SA, Lutheran Care, Mission Australia, The Salvation Army and of course Us, Sonder.

Toward Home Alliance in collaboration with the South Australian Housing Authority (SAHA) has identified a need for transformational change in the way services support people affected by homelessness. The Toward Home Alliance strategy focuses on shifting homelessness services from crisis management to early intervention and prevention. We recognise that every position within the Toward Home Alliance has a vital role to play in reducing homelessness.

(Part-Time to Full-Time Up to 37.5 hrs per week)

Working Location: Position available to be based within Sonder and/or Alliance Partnership sites located across the southern and CBD regions. Mobile delivery is required.

The Aboriginal Peer Outreach Worker will work as part of the Toward Home Service. They will utilise their personal experience of homelessness challenges and recovery to engage with the people experiencing homelessness. You will draw from a strengths based recovery orientated service of care and act as a role model for Aboriginal people experiencing homelessness with contributing health factors.

In addition, the Outreach Worker will work collaboratively with the Toward Home multidisciplinary team to better connect people experiencing homelessness to health and support services that will improve their mental health outcomes and reduce the barriers to access appropriate primary health care services. Flexible working arrangements will be required!

The overall aims of the Toward Home Aboriginal Peer Outreach Worker role is to:

  • Provide and hold hope, inspiration and empowerment for recovery
  • Destigmatise mental health challenges
  • Create a mutual and reciprocal relationship with people experiencing homelessness
  • Support Aboriginal people experiencing homelessness to access the services they require

Ideally the successful applicant will have a certificate IV in Community Services and /or Peer Work or equivalent, however Sonder are committed to supporting individuals reach qualifications required for this role and can discuss the incumbent working towards the certificate rather than already achieved.
