Board Members (voluntary)

Speak Out Association of Tasmania
  • Speak Out is seeking people from across Tasmania to join their committed Board.
  • Speak Out is run by and for people with disability.

We are a DPO (Disabled People’s Organisation). This means organisations that:

  • Actively evidence and demonstrate their commitment to the Social Model of Disability, which seeks to remove barriers for people with disability to access mainstream services and live an ordinary life.
  • Are run by and for people with disability and/or their families which is supported by a minimum of 50% of people with a disability and/or their families making up the organisation’s board and staff.

As a high-performing state-wide advocacy service for people with disability and a membership-based disability people’s organisation for people with intellectual disability and/or disability that impacts learning, we aim to develop a respectful and inclusive community by promoting and defending rights through our advocacy work; good governance that includes people with intellectual disability; and building the capacity of communities.

  • Advocacy is provided when a person with disability feels their needs are not being met, they have been treated unfairly or when the person’s supports have broken down and the individual is at risk. This is provided by our professional advocates.
  • Our Self-Advocacy Groups meet each month where people get together, share ideas and develop skills in how to speak up and have a say.
  • Speak Out also supports peer support groups and networks across the state.
  • The Speak Out conference is the longest running self-advocacy conference for people with disability in Australia and is held annually.
  • Speak Out is the member organisation for Inclusion Australia – the National Council on Intellectual Disability; and has links with Inclusion International.

We are currently going through a period of organisational development, and welcome people who are interested in performing a variety of roles, that include:

  • Membership of the Board of Management - a commitment of approximately 4 hours per month. Contribution to the Speak Out Conference (September each year) is also valued.
  • Membership of one of two advisory committee’s that provide financial, risk management and policy advice to the Board of Management (A commitment of approximately 2-5 hours per quarter).

At present, the Board meets 9 times per year on the third Thursday of the month 7.00pm-8.30pm. Board members link via teleconferencing from locations across the state, with a face-to-face option also available in Hobart. The Board sub-committees meet to progress their various items.

We strongly encourage individuals with a lived experience of disability to apply.

Board skills sought:

  • Lived experience of disability i.e. people with disability / family members of people with disability
  • Commitment to Human Rights and Social Justice
  • General Board skills
  • Note-taker / Secretary
