We have an exciting opportunity for two Trainee Data Scientists to join our company. This is a permanent, full-time opportunity, based at our Melbourne CBD office with hybrid work arrangements available. Trainee Data Scientists at the Social Research Centre typically complete their traineeship within 12 to 18 months and progress to become a Data Scientist in the company.

Trainee Data Scientists at the Social Research Centre are heavily involved in data manipulation and survey data processing. Programming experience in R or Python is essential. Previous professional experience in working with large datasets, databases or in computer programming will be highly regarded.

Due to restrictions arising from the COVID-19 pandemic, the successful candidate will be required at times to work remotely. A suitable home workspace and computer setup, and reliable internet connection are essential.

Key responsibilities in this role:

The successful candidate will be supporting other members of the Data Science Group on all tasks in the survey cycle, including survey sample preparation, data collection preparation, survey and in-field reminder launch, administration of survey fieldwork progress monitoring, data processing, data analysis and visualisation, and other ad hoc data reporting.

Key Selection Criteria:

  • Solid programming experience using R or Python to manipulate or analyse complex datasets.
  • Experience with using MS Office and Windows.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and the ability to identify inaccuracies in data.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently to achieve outcomes.
  • Work in a logical and methodical manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple deadlines without impacting quality/timing.
  • Ability to think "outside the box" to find creative solutions to problems.
  • A team player who is focused on the overall performance of the department/organisation.
  • Well-developed verbal and written communication skills and an ability to communicate complex data concepts to a non-technical audience.
  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline, such as Statistics, Mathematics, Computer science, Analytics or Informatics.
  • A good understanding of the ethical and legal responsibilities pertaining to data confidentiality and privacy.

Desirable:

  • Experience with version control tools (e.g. Git).
  • Exposure to project management and collaboration platforms such as GitHub.
  • An understanding of database concepts and data-entity relationships.
