St Vincent’s is a major teaching, research and tertiary referral centre providing acute or chronic medical and surgical services, as well as clinical training. Advanced medical research and translating the results into clinical practice allows doctors, nurses and allied health professionals to provide better quality healthcare for patients. 

The St Vincent’s Hospital (Melbourne) Animal Ethics Committee is responsible for the review, approval and ongoing monitoring of all research and teaching involving animals on the St Vincent’s Campus and the Committee’s purpose is to ensure that all activities relating to the care and use of animals are conducted in compliance with the Australian code for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes (2013).

St Vincent’s Hospital (Melbourne) AEC is seeking new Category C members (Animal Welfare).

Key Criteria for a Category C member:

  • Have a demonstrated commitment and experience in improving the welfare of animals
  • Not otherwise associated with institutions utilising the AEC
  • Not involved in the care and use of animals for scientific purposes
  • While not representing an animal welfare organisation, the person should, where possible, be selected on the basis of active membership of and endorsement by, such an organisation.
  • Veterinarians with specific animal welfare interest and experience may be eligible

Appointment to the AEC involves attending meetings nine times per year on the third Wednesday of the month (except for January, April and October). Agenda and documents are sent out to Committee members for review two weeks prior to the scheduled meeting date. Pre-reading prior to the meeting would be approx. 2-3 hours. The meetings are currently held online, start at 4pm and generally last up to 2 hours. When meetings return to in-person they are held at the Fitzroy Campus. Participation in facility inspections, post-approval monitoring and training sessions is also required.
